I have recently saw The Woodsman, which stars Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Eve and Mos Def. I have to say it was a hard hitting movie to see, esepcially with what the protagonist has done. It is grim and gritty like a slap from a miserable The Thing. I will recommend it to everyone who wants to watch it, but I have to warn you, it is pretty tough to muster.

Please discuss. A better review will be written on my blog

We've talked about The woodsman a couple times in other topics, here and here. I agree with you, Woodsman is a marvelous piece of work. Kevin Bacon deserves all kinds of accolades for his willingness to take on such gritty subjects, even more to pull them off as he does.

Lucky he wasn't playing a gay paedophile in this movie.

"What a Wonderful World"

WARNING - SPOILERS

There is one thing about this film that I believe makes it more or less shocking for people.

My interpretation of the film, based on the discussions with the psychiatrist and Bacon's own comments to Sedgwick and others, is that he didn't have sex with the girls. It doesn't necessarily make the crime more or less awful (particularly for the girls), but I think that it changes the way you view the battle Bacon is fighting.

I got to thinking about this when I saw a review on fwfr 'Sister banger'. I believe this to be inaccurate.

I also believe that the scene at the end of the film where Bacon asks the girl to sit on his knee, because he wants to smell her hair and touch her, is significant because the girl seems to be telling him that her father is abusing her. Bacon sees himself reflected in this, and possibly sees where his feelings could get further out of control if he doesn't keep a handle on them.

Another point is where the detective tells him that the man he beat up had raped a boy somewhere else. Bacon was really beating up on himself, of course. But the detective seems to know it was Bacon. If Bacon was a child rapist he would have been back in jail before his feet touched the ground. Prior to this incident the detective was intent on making life uncomfortable for Bacon as he suspected him of preying on local children.

Based on people's discussions about this film, I was prepared for something more graphic. I think that Bacon doesn't make the character sympathetic - because he is not sympathetic to himself. But he beautifully portrays a man at odds with himself, knowing that his behaviour towards young girls is wrong but not able to stop himself feeling that way. Notice that the only time Bacon is really animated in the film is when he is talking to the girl in the woods.

Just wondering if I did the wrong thing in my previous email? I'd love to discuss this movie since I feel people's responses to it will be partly, or even mostly, based in what they feel about what the Bacon character did. I wrote my email thinking this might be an opporunity to do so - but perhaps people don't discuss movies in this way on this site?

I don't think I gave away that many 'spoilers' but I have to say that what I read about the movie both before and after seeing it has not satisified my need to discuss how it made people feel.

I have no idea how to access mampers blog.

I assume you mean "post" not "email"? There have been other discussions about this movie in the past here (I just had a quick look through the archives but couldn't find it), which may be the reason for a slow discussion.

I tend to agree with all your points in your above post, I don't have much to add to it. I think the viewers felt somewhat sympathetic to Bacon's character as he wasn't a remorseless psychopathic predator like some paedophiles and/or rapists are; he was a tortured soul who knew that what he did was wrong and was trying to control himself.

OK, thanks. Truth is only watched it three days ago, so it's really fresh in my mind, but of course it's about 3 years old now. I was worried that I'd done the wrong thing by potentially giving spoilers. I haven't checked out many fourums that are discussing films. This one caught my attention because I'd just watched it.

Still like to know how to access Mampers' blog?

Hey Mr Shiv. I was gonna write blog on it giving my points of view on it, but it will have to be done on another time. Sorry about this. As Eric Cartman would say, I have been hella busy, but hopefully it will get done
