No offense to Kolo, but I just read this "Antwone Fisher" review in passing:

Foster mother fucks-up Fisher.

Question: How does this qualify as four words? The hyphen doesn't belong there (sorry, editor in me can't resist), and I've even had reviews rejected when a hyphen DID belong in a phrase that the MERPs read as five words!

. . . or is this another case of "MERPs will be MERPs"???

By the way, I've never really asked before: What does "MERP" stand for?

Thanks.

Multiple Editor Review Processor? Or something....

You're right, the dictionary shows "fuck up" as two words. You should report it as "more than four words". Well spotted...

I'd say someone fucked-up.

I've often wondered whether there are any official (or unofficial) rules for hyphen use.

What if the review were written as: Foster mother, fucked-up Fisher.

Are hyphenated adjectives considered one word?

Dictionary.com would seem to think so:

I'm not sure that that dictionary entry is really accurate, in that I don't think fucked up should be hyphenated in predicative position. However, it should definitely be hyphenated in attributive position, as in chazbo's example. Hyphenating the verb is highly unlikely to ever come into accepted usage, since "fucks Fisher up" is possible, i.e. fucks and up have to be separate words.

This thread would be better in Site Maintenance, by the way.

I agree, Sal. If someone could explain how to "move" a thread, I'd be happy to oblige . . . or, if it's possible for someone other than the thread's originator to do so, feel free!

I'm pretty sure that "fuck-up" can qualify as a single hyphenated word, but that's only when it's used as a noun. For example, one who fucks up on a regular basis might be refered to as a fuck-up. "Mike fucked up the project again. I can't believe what a fuck-up he is."

But that's only useful for future reference, as this particular usage is most definitely not as a noun, but as an operative verb. That's five words there.

Yep, there's no doubt about that.
