I'm having a little bit of a problem writing reviews for her movies, such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Hitcher and Last Exit to Brooklyn because it seems unclear whether we can refer to her as "Jason-Leigh" as one word in a review. It would be better if we could because if we called her "Leigh", who knows, it could mean "Vivien Leigh" or someone else with that surname (or first name). I'm assuming that the double-barreled "Jason-Leigh" name happened because there was already a "Jennifer Leigh" registered as a member of the SAG or something like that. I dunno, maybe I'm totally wrong about that. I don't know her life story.  |

Yep, multiple-name actors are always a problem like this. Benj has made it plain in the past that if spaces are in names, they count as word separators to avoid opening a whole can of worms. And hyphenation is allowed if it's legit, but it looks like in this case it isn't.
IMDb says:-
Took the name 'Jason' from family friend actor Jason Evers. (Look at trivia for Jason Robards, says that 'Jason' in her name was taken from him.)
"Jennifer Jason Leigh" is three words according to IMDb so that would have to be taken as gospel. I'd suggest you just use "Leigh" or "Jennifer", and use the other three words in your review to make it non-generic.  |

| It might not get passed, but you could also try 'J.J.L.' I would say this is less obvious than my unsuccessful 'S.B.C.', but you never know. |

I've had initials pass before, I can't remember if it was SLJ (Samuel L. Jackson) or TLJ (Tommy Lee Jones).
In any case, JJL's father was Vic Morrow, who was infamously killed during the shooting of The Twilight Zone when the helicopter crashed during a night shoot. |

Benj definitely allows DeNiro because some films (erroneously) list him with that format.
Although Helena does present it as separate words, her cousin Crispin hyphenates it. While one should follow her version for her, at least hyphenation would not be completely random. |

Unless my memory is crap (which it is!) benj has clarified this in the past. "DeNiro" and "Bonham-Carter" both appear on their IMDb pages under "Sometimes Credited As", and they both appear frequently written like that in movie credits. So they're 'valid', although this doesn't make any comment about whether the actors themselves want it written like that (I presume they don't).
Whereas Jennifer Jason Leigh's name is not written as "Jason-Leigh" on her IMDb page, not even once, so it's not valid, and fwfr isn't gonna be the first to attempt to change it for her. Simple, really.
<Anyone who wants could try a search in the archives for "DeNiro" and you'll probably drag up the old thread(s) on the issue. I'm too lazy.> |
