"Always entranced by cinema."

Yet another fairy-tale for adults who are convinced they're really above all that and just want another meaningless action film with a twist. Summed up by the poster strapline: If you can see the future, you can change it.

Yeah, right! We're all four years old and we all want to believe that complicated world issues, life and death geopolitical situations just require a hero, however unlikely, to save the world. So with not a cape or batsuit in sight Nic Cage steps up to the plate, using an unexplained power to see two minutes into the future to avert nuclear disaster. Yes, okay, let's all willingly check our disbelief with the gal on the door and step aboard for the ride.

Well, I'd do that uncomplainingly, willingly, even eagerly ... if only it were a good movie. But despite a long-overdue return the screen for an aging but still twinkly Peter Falk, despite the best efforts of canny FBI agent Julianne Moore [let's face it, one of the most honest actors around], and despite a premise which I hope worked better in the Philip K Dick source material, this is dreary. I mean the world is at stake, fer crying out loud ... life as we know it and all that. So where's the dramatic tension? Where's the sense of urgency? Where - I ask ya - is some credible scene explaining why the world of diplomacy's been circumnavigated in favor of the FBI calling all the shots. And against whom? Hints of a Russian enemy, yet all the bad guys we meet seem to be French. I dunno - this seems to be some crap attempt to score cheap points by stitching contemporary political references onto what were undoubtedly Cold War givens.

I guess in story-telling as in spying, you're only as good as your intelligence. Sadly neither film nor agents has any.

Yes, quite. Russia has somehow lost a huge nuclear bomb and this has somehow been smuggled into the U.S. by French terrorists with no apparent cause or demands...

While silly, the concept might have been pulled off. Some of the different ways in which we see him seeing ahead are not too bad. The ending is very annoying and pointless, though.

"Thank God we found you, Spider-Man! There's a giant asteroid about to destroy the Earth and we need your help!"

How, in God's name, will a man who can look two minutes in the future tell you where in the contiguous United States a nuclear bomb will go off in time to defuse it? He can look TWO MINUTES. The weather man sees into the future farther than he does.

So did 'Big Blue,' presumably.
