Every film of Akiro Kurosawa, but especially Ran and Kagemusha - sets the standard for spectacle, excitement, sheer directorial brilliance!
Anything you can get your mitts on by Yasujiro Ozu - a total master of examining family relationships. The link takes you to a neat precis of some of his best.
Zhang Yimou's seminal trilogy combining action and manners:
Hong gao liang (1987)

I also commonly use these IMDb links for finding not-so-well-known good movies.
Japan
South Korea
Hong Kong
China
Taiwan
etc. Actually this is the main method I use for filling up my netflix queue. As a rule though, anything with less than a few hundred votes is hard to find. This may not be such an issue for rental agencies with bigger libraries than the NZ ones though. |

I'm not sure if the Middle East counts as being part of Asia, but I recently discovered Ani Yerushalmi, an Israeli film from the early 1970s or late 1960s that is now on my all time guilty pleasures list, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except maybe ChocolateLady. |

Agreed about Ran and Ikiru. That's why I put in a general list for Kurosawa, he's like Hitchcock, all his movies are worth watching. Sure, some are better than others, but a 'bad' Hitch or Kurosawa is still better than most. And the best ones are brilliant. 
I've watched every Hitch or Kurosawa I could get my hands on, and no disappointments at all. |

hey, i thought of another way to look at this.
here are some artists who are fixtures of Hong Kong films who are usually can't-miss. check out projects featuring some of these folks:
directors Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam.
actors Danny Lee, Simon Yam, Donnie Yen, and for something bizarre/over-the-top/racy, check out Amy Yip.
anything starring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao. i highly recommend "Dragons Forever." |

Guess what: I hate Hitchcock. I'll take Rear Window, and I've always loved the suspense of Rope. But I find most of his work excruciating, especially Vertigo.
Funny how radically different our opinions on him can be, and yet we agree so easily on Kurosawa! |

| Of all the Kurosawas I've seen, Ran and Ikiru are easily the weakest. The last third of Ikiru especially is just unwatchable (save the famous shot on the swingset), and Ran is kind of cardboard. |
