The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (yes, I know...)have asked in the latest issue of their magazine for suggestions for flms that feature materials, metals or mining in the plot.

Examples given include:

The Graduate (plastics)
Superman (kryptonite)
The Plastics Inventor (a Donld Duck short)

I've come up with:

Terminator/Terminator 2 (shape changing metals)
Alien 3 (the lead smelting works)
Goldfinger
Blood Diamond
Flubber
Gold (Roger Moore movie about gold mining)
The Core
The Gold Rush

Has anyone got any more??

LOL!

The Iron Giant ("Fe Fe Fe fun!" - Salopian)
X-Men - Magneto has strange powers over metal, Wolverine has some kind of metal skeleton and metal claws.

GHcool's Least Favorite Mining/Metal Movie: Battlefield Earth ...

quote:
"Terl [the John Travolta alien character] is head of security for the Psychlos and has a secret scheme to use the humans as slaves to mine gold for him. ... Jonnie Goodboy [a human character] figures out a way to avoid slave labor in the gold mines. He and his men simply go to Fort Knox, break in and steal gold. Of course it's been waiting there for 1,000 years." - Roger Ebert in his original review of Battlefield Earth

Well, The Man in the White Suit centres on the invention of a special fabric that never wears out and never even gets dirty. So it's very much about a particular material. Whereas The Pajama Game seems to be primarily about a labour dispute, that happens to take place in a clothing factory.
