There is a reason why Ratatouille is rated 8.5 out of 10 on IMDb. That reason is, it is FANTASTIC. The idea is adorable, the characters are wonderful, the graphics and animation is the best ever and the script is a rollercoaster from start to end. No, it isn't a slap on the knee, rolling on the floor, funniest movie I've ever seen, but it will give you plenty of guffaws and have you smiling all the way through. Not to be missed, surpasses Cars by far, and as exciting as The Incredibles. As soon as that DVD is out, I'm gonna get myself a copy of that puppy!

I think it is a rat. Not a puppy. |

When you see the film, you'll know how repulsive that pun is!
Ooops. My bad, people. I now see that this marvelous movie will only be released in the UK in October! How is that possible? It was released in the USA on June 26, and here in Israel on July 6. I would have thought that it would get to you soon after. It's not like you have to do a translation into a foreign language like we did. |

I thought it was one of the best movies (animated or otherwise) made aboout food. You could almost smell and taste the dishes - it explained why cooking is such a special gift and yes the script, voice acting and animation were top notch. |

Right before I went to see this, I ate a disgusting Hungry Man TV dinner. This movie made me feel ashamed of my life. |

Yeah, but we do keep getting the wonderful trailers! I have to report that at the Simpsons screening, all the kidlets in the audience laughed louder at the Rat trailer than at any single Simpson moment. Make of that what you will. The Rat does look terrif!

There are few topics that I'm as enthusiastic about as food. And I'm also a mega-fan of animation. Can't wait to see this. |

This is somewhat surprising because while it was a funny movie, it did not have that many laugh out loud moments - and it is the least kid-oriented Pixar film yet - not that its not kid-friendly - kids will enjoy it, but it is more mature, cerebral but nonetheless magical. |

My view exactly.

CL - just wanted to say you really are coming on by leaps and bounds with your reviews and reviewing style. I really like the way you've started incorporating story elements into your critical analysis.
Here follow a couple of tips -- offered in the constructive spirit of improvement and honing. For what they're worth. And maybe part of BB's occasional series of the Critics Class.
I'd love to see you try a review imposing on yourself the same space/word count restrictions which Arts Editors demand. I know you're writing for online readers -- "in space no one can here you cut the copy!" -- but still, I think it's a terrific discipline. If, for example, I were your editor and I said of your Ratatouille piece -- great stuff, CL, but we have to lose 350 words ... can you keep your enthusiasm conveying your personality as well as your comments, your critical assessments of the film's personnel, and additional info?
Try it, if you like ... or tell me to naff off and I won't be offended!!

Thanks and much appreciated. Actually, I've been working very hard on doing just that.
If you go back to my earlier reviews, you'll see that they can get up into the 2000+ range. I've recently been writing book reviews for another site, where their wordcount is 600-800 words - MAX. This has made me work very hard in cutting back my word count for all reviews, and I think they're better for it.
But I got carried away with this one - my bad!
The problem with concise reviews on DooYoo is that many readers equate quantity with quality. If I want to earn crowns (which means more money for me, which means being able to buy more books, CDs and DVDs via Amazon), then I have to WOW the readers. The members on the site don't seem to get wowed by shorter reviews. So I have to walk a thin line - give them enough so that they'll nominate my review for a crown, but keep it short enough so that I won't sound like I'm rambling on and on. So, while I wouldn't mind taking up your challenge, I couldn't post such a short review on DooYoo without risking potential income.
Maybe on IMDb or Amazon... hm...
