"X marks the spot"

Over the years, the Fourum has seen a number of controversies. Many have tested the bounds of censorship, with only a few actually having had various threads -- or posts -- deleted. I've always been a proponent of free speech, tempered by moderation. I also prefer challenges to the critical process over mere insult.

As a fwiffer, PKMN enjoys the same right as others to post in the Fourum. Certainly, PKMN does not need my assistance in expressing himself, so I acknowledge at the outset that he quite ably employs an effective incisiveness in his observations.

But unlike the patient "etherized upon a table," I have a choice whether to bear each incision. On the street, we have limited choices when faced with an assault, as we cannot always avoid the encounter, nor necessarily should we.

However, when the "encounter" requires my active interaction to have any affect on me -- as, for example, when watching images on television -- I have more determinative choices. I can get into it or not. I can change the channel or turn down the volume, depending on whether I want to or need to.

FWFR is not a street encounter: it's more like interactive television. For me to engage in what goes on here, I have to click on the link.

In the Fourum, some threads I avoid because I have no interest in them. Others have proved as compelling as car wrecks. A car wreck is unfortunate; but what makes it really bothersome is that everyone driving by slows down to look, thus causing backed-up traffic and more, frustrated drivers (who nonetheless also slow down to look).

In emergency situations -- when emergency personnel are not yet available -- some drivers get out and try to help. If it means saving a life, that can be a good thing. But oftentimes, fellow drivers merely muck up the situation, leaving the professional rescuers more of a mess to clean up, including unintentionally misguided good will.

What would happen if drivers stopped slowing down to look? Traffic would continue at a more agreeable pace. And if no one is literally dying, it's probably better to leave the rescue and clean-up to the professionals.

PKMN has a knack for crafting car wrecks. But it's slowing us all down to look.

This thread does not need further posts, as I expect there is only one post that will follow like clockwork. If you feel like disagreeing with me, be my guest, but you need not register written agreement. In fact, I urge you not to. Once you've read it, please, don't come back.

The more important thing is to stop looking at the carnage and twisted metal. Everyone has other, better places to go, so do your part in helping traffic move along, in order that we get where we really want to be, faster.
