China's policy on environmentalism is that they have an entitlement to pollute as much as the West did before we really knew better. They view environmental destruction as a matter of national pride...kind of a measuring stick of economic development and global status.

But I have to admit it's only marginally better than US policy, which is sort of like "yeah, we know it's bad and we don't really want to do it, but business is business...but we'll try to cut down a little." No wonder the Chinese have come to equate pollution with being a global superpower. In a few years when they finally overtake us as the world's #1 polluter, they'll probably be throwing parades.

Well, all good points for debate, but in this case it's greed and waste pure and simple. Greed for overfishing creating mechanisms that trap the dolphins as well as edible fish; dolphins end up dead and rotting in the river. And now are undoubtedly no more. Ever Gone. This is a gorgeous intelligent species which has lived peacefully on earth for 22 million years. Wiped out in a few generations.

We're all to blame, really. But in this case ... it's China China China all the way to dolphin oblivion.

Well, you ARE talking about a country where in some cities, cars run with their headlights on in the daytime and air quality is measured in "the building index," as in: when you look down the street, how many buildings can you see before they just disappear into the haze?

Canadian cars do that too. All cars have had manditory "running lights" for some 15-20 years.
