My son and I got an R Lee Ermy doll for my husband for Christmas. We chose the "extra salty" version. It uses his line from Full Metal Jacket (and other gems): "You had best [unbleep] yourself or I will unscrew your head and [bleep] down your neck!"

The only thing that comes to mind is the joke "hukt on fonix werks," but that's the gist of it. Phonics is confusing to a lot of kids. |

Understood (livie). So, to ensure that livie's post (which appears to have gotten lost in the shuffle) and duh's both don't go unanswered:

Just a comment, from an old mother who homeschooled her kids... I don't know about other kids, but phonics worked very well for mine. We didn't use "hooked on phonics", but used a book that I can't remember the title of now. After each chapter was completed, the child got to put a sticker on a page of the chapter. My daughter was reading on her own at age 4 and my son had it mastered by age 6. We just about wore that book out, and then sent it along to a friend who had begun homeschooling her child.
Phonics was especially useful for my son, on account of his progressive hearing loss. Later, while he was in public school for a couple of years, the school audiologist told me that she was surprised at how good his speech and enunciation was.
Both kids were high-scorers in language-related skills and courses throughout their lives. I think phonics had a lot to do with that.
When I was a second grader, I taught myself how to read with phonics. Kind of backed into it. That was the time of the "look-say" method and I just wasn't getting it, despite my intense desire to read. One day in the classroom, I began to analyze stuff the teacher had written on the board and I realized that the letters represented sounds, and from there I put it together -- on my own, without any help from the educational system. (My son calls it "the communist indoctrination system" LOL.)
OK back to the regular program... |
