I think livie is suggesting that the EU essentially wiped out the individual curency systems of the several participating European countries, the economic systems of which were effectively LETS by comparison.

Well that's not really what LETS is, but why quibble - it's only a game!

Yup, that is what I was suggesting. I know it's not literally the same thing, but it is so in effect. I set up a LETS kind of system on one of our residential units for dually diagnosed high functioning individuals. They each had a set of criteria wherein they could accrue points for meeting goals set in programming. Each week, we had a store stocked with great things (snacks, books, CDs, DVDs, some clothing, etc.) which had a monetary value assigned to them. The points were given monetary values as well. The residents got to shop at the store to exchange points. We converted it to a monetary value to teach about money, but it could have been left at point values. We had a "lay away" system and some of the residents would put their points on lay away toward bigger items they wanted, such as CD or DVD players, larger clothing items, trips to eat out, etc. It was a great system. The only drawback is that we didn't have much budget for it, so my friend Roger, who was the team leader, and I supplied most of the items. We didn't mind. |
