That's not what divides the sexes, though. It is of course the case that people only find the people they find attractive attractive. The issue is that very few women would find erotic a sex scene between even those actors they think the hottest.

Yeah, I was going to devote a section of the article to this social anomaly, but there wasn't enough space. I hope to get another chance at some point though, because it's always been something that puzzles me and I've got theories ... oh yes I do!

The explanation is mathematical. Two pairs of norks and legs are twice as good as one pair.

I totally agree. I was just talking about men's reaction to lesbian scenes in films. Mr BI's friends apart, I've never met a straight woman who was sexually aroused by a scene of gay men in sex scenes. I know some women who've told their male friends they were aroused because they wanted them to create a fantasy image of themselves in the man's mind.

But, hey - I don't know every woman in the world.

Of all of the movies that I...liked the ones that shocked me most were Brokeback and last night, Secretary.

I hadn't seriously considered B&D / S&M until I saw that movie.

I have no logical, or even illogical, explanation for the phenomena. The whole thing seems totally nonsencial, to be turned on by a situation that by its very nature would seem to exclude you.

But I can't deny it, there is nothing that turns me on more

Edit: I had this film on my 'avoid at all costs list' (along with anything else by Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller or Steve Martin). Is anyone who's seen it saying I would be wrong, and that I should overcome my prejudice (against sandler, not homosexuals) to see it?

Maybe not. It is typical Sandler in style. I was just pleased that it was more progressive than I expected

To get over your predjudice, I would recommend:
Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love (Sandler)
The Royal Tenenbaums, Reality Bites, and Zero Effect (Stiller)
Parenthood, L.A. Story, Bowfinger, and Shopgirl (Martin)

I cannot comment on Chuck/Larry as I have not seen it.

A person who doesn't like Steve Martin is a man without a soul. That's not prejudice, that's a fact.

Thank goodness I'm a woman.

I used to like him, but he's been doing so much crap lately - remakes of Father of the Bride, Pink Panther, and The Out of Towners, along with lots of other forgettable stuff. Yeah, I'll watch him when he's on "Saturday Night Live", but he really needs to find some new shtick for his movies soon.

As a prude and a senior citizen, I agree that I wouldn't be turned on by watching explicit gay sex. Hell, I'm not even turned on by watching explicit heterosexual sex. The whole thing bores me.

What I have found sexy, however, is Steven Rea and Jaye Davidson in their roles in The Crying Game. Jaye Davidson is simply beautiful and Steven Rea is sexy. I also find Forrest Whitaker quite interesting, especially as he ages. I think I will like Brokeback Mountain if I ever see it, especially because of Heath Ledger. To me, Brokeback Mountain is appealing because it is a twist on the star-crossed lovers theme. Boy/girl romance is SO been-there/done-that.

This wasn't film, it was TV, but I liked the tension and the action between Buffy and Spike as Slayer and Vampire on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. She was attracted to him but didn't love him. He loved her horribly, terribly but knew she would never love him the same way. Their scene together in the Buffy musical episode, Once More With Feeling is beautiful and funny.

Looking at what I've just written, I guess I want a good context for any sex scenes. The animal thing done in a cursory and obligatory way isn't worth my time. Oh yeah, here come the obligatory sex scene, I say as I get up from the couch and leave the room to go do something more interesting, like take out the trash.

Edited to add that the sexiest movie I've ever seen is GiGi...and they don't even kiss!

Pride & Prejudice - the miniseries with Jennifer Eale and Colin Firth... they almost kiss once, at the end, when they're married and whoa!

Sean, I was thinking about your mathematical idea and wanted to put this to you: is seeing two girls solo but in the same shot as good as a lesbian scene? If contact is a factor, are two straight pairings in the shot as good as one lesbian one? It's an interesting phenomenon.
