Eh, he's obviously not OK if he's sick and might have to go into hospital.

I don't think this is a suitable context for flippancy like that. My phrasing was perfectly reasonable to indicate my hope that it is nothing too serious, and it is also perfectly standard English to use the present tense with regard to the future.
