Well the original trailer is far more likely to get me to the cinema than the new one. The new one suggests it's cringe-adelic pretentious twaddle.
I'm guessing I'll wait for the DVD like for most movies anyway. |

Nahhh, there's nothing wrong with extreme mindless violence for general entertainment purposes.
But if they pretend that the movie makes some kind of useful comment about life the universe and everything then I lose interest. |

Here's another movie in the style of tongue in cheek death fest:
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
It looks like it's going to everything the first film should have been. |

I was going to pass on this one, but then I just read a review that just gushed about how great it was. 9 out of 10, blah blah.
Still a Rambo movie, but a really good Rambo movie. I may have to buy a tub of popcorn and check it out.
quote: Stallone is still one to be reckoned with. The latest batch of silver screen heroes have nothing on him. He is older, wiser and could take all the Tom Cruises or Matt Damons without breaking a sweat. He proves once again why he is a legend. And aside from taking on the character of John Rambo again, he also directed the latest adventure and has a screenwriting credit to boot. And much like he did for ROCKY BALBOA, he revitalizes the legend by adding a touch of humanity. Dont get me wrong, you wont see this guy picking flowers or going to a yoga class.

I hated the original, so it was almost inevitable that if I see this new one, I would like it more. Judging by the trailer, it looks like the production values are there. I doubt I'll watch it though. |

I've put myself through a Rambo crash course in preparation for the sequel.
I'd already seen the first one, it is great. It's also the only serious movie in the series. The third one is the goofiest and it has its charms, Rambo facing down the entire Russian army and just charging at them guns a-blazin', and the actual honest-to-god cavalry shows up.
The second is goofy but takes itself seriously, and for that reason it is easily the worst of the movies. The two sides just don't mix very well -- Stallone winning the Vietnam War in 1985, then giving a speech about how they all just want their country to love them just as much as they love it -- ugh. And of course there's the ending song by, you guessed it, Frank Stallone. Man oh man.
From the trailers, I can tell that 1) it's about an intensely serious topic, the brutal Burmese military regime, and 2) it is wayyyy over-the-top. I don't think the two things are going to mix very well. |

I can't shake the mental image of an ancient Sly Stallone having drunken ex-sex. Bah! |

This thread's going in a sweet direction... I can't even get the image of Sly having sober sex outta my head, but...
To get back to the thrust... I saw the un-cut internet trailer at a friend's house last weekend and... when Sly turns the driver of a vehicle into a 'meat-waffle' with the .50-cal.... Well, I knew I'd be bumpin' this one up on my Netflix queue.
I don't view many films in the theater these days(People won't shut the F... up), but this'll rate a view at home! |

I am writing a piece on the new Rambo flick for my blog at the moment. It's tad on the negative side, to say the least.

My wife is Burmese. Same situation as Beyond Rangoon. I think we're going to see it today.
But really I wanted to post to this thread one of those "things that make you go Hmmm."
On IMDB, Rambo has a thousand reviews averaging 8.3
On Rotten Tomatoes, it's closer to 34%
Did the studio stack the votes on IMDB?
Official Rambo site.
Ali is right on the money with the final paragraph in his blog. I am close to some of the Karen leaders who were concerned about this film for that very reason. I will try to comment on that soon.

Well, Stallone treats the Burmese ethnic cleansing more respectfully than the franchise's previous retarded takes on Vietnam POWs and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Rambo is back to the taciturn, emotionally deadened vet of the first movie too, that's a good thing -- no "America, fuck yeah" speeches in this one. And because Rambo movies and war in general has gone out of style since the 1980s, Stallone is working harder to justify Rambo's existence. Where Parts II and III treated murder and mayhem as a given, "Rambo" uses it as a philosophical backbone -- that the world needs Ramboes because pacifism only gets you dead pacifists. Not a point I agree with, but a point worth disagreeing about, it's a legitimate point of view. Unfortunately, Stallone has made a Rambo movie that's half Rambo and half The Killing Fields, and it's a really unsatisfying mix. We don't have Rambos going in there to fix everything. Too-close ties to real world events also brought down the last Die Hard sequel. What's next, Indiana Jones 4 taking place in Darfur? Keep your politics out of my dumb action movie, plz. |
