Don't get me wrong. I loved No Country For Old Men. But, having seen all 5 movies up for Best Picture in the Oscars this year, I have to say I give the nod to "There Will Be Blood".

I just thought it was a better story. And, although, I thought Javier Bardem was brilliant. I thought Daniel Day-Lewis was just amazing (as usual). I was riveted all the way through that movie.

No Country had some inconsistencies to the story. Like, the fact that Josh Brolin's character was so smart. And yet, his death was just a footnote in the movie. We didn't even see it happen.

And the Tommy Lee Jones character? I guess I didn't get the point to having him play that role. He usually is someone much more heroic.

I loved a lot of that movie. And I loved that it ended unexpectedly. I don't need a happy ending.

Blood was just more cohesive for me. And therefore, I thought a better movie start to finish. And beautifully shot, too.

What do you guys think? I'm splitting hairs, mind you. No Country was a great movie.

Sorry for possibly not spelling some names correctly here.

I agree with you em - I loved both but something in the blood story abut being a parent spoke to me - not that I have been through whart he has, but it ripped my heart out.

There Will Be Blood

As I've mentioned in other threads, I was put off by the amount of time given to Bell in No Country for Old Men, and thrilled by PTA's bombastic treatment of a banal story with big themes.

There Will Be Blood isn't quite the masterpiece some are claiming it to be (narratively it's too much of a galumphing, oddly-shaped monster for that), but I have no problem calling it the best film of 2007.

No Country for Old Men, no contest. The only good thing about the other film is Day-Lewis's great performance. I was content for him to get the Oscar for that, but that's not enough to make a film - not that film, at any rate. There were better films in 2007 than No Country for Old Men, but There Will Be Blood certainly wasn't one of them.

Which would be your Best Film of 2007 choice?

I saw Blood as much more than just DDL's performance. That was great, yes. But the story, the little boy, the preacher, the plotting and tactics to get all of the oil, the slow descent into madness, the relationship with his "son", it was all engrossing for me.

Well, the descent into madness I would credit to Day-Lewis, especially as it was entirely standard (i.e. did not involve unusual plot features or dialogue). The other things I found to be quite falsely developed or just not the case at all (I didn't find it beautifully shot, for example - any old person can film dust and make it look dusty).

My by-mid-January preferences from 2007 can be found here. Into the I.M.D.B. 2007 list I might slot 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and Juno.

No Country For Old Men, easily. There Will Be Blood is not even in the same league.

There's no doubting that DDL's performance was magnificent, and worthy of an oscar, but I can't say that I 'enjoyed' the film. In fact, the first thing i said when I came out was, "I hope I don't have to see that again within the next ten years". To me it was like going to see the killing fields in Cambodia - hugely powerful but disturbing and upsetting. And not something you'd like to do again on a return trip to Cambodia.

No country, on the other hand, I could watch over and over again. So:

There Will be Blood = The Killing Fields
No Country = A beach in Goa

I enjoyed Blood. I understand what you mean about not wanting to see it again -- because I have had that feeling before as well-- Amistad, The Accused. But, I didn't have that feeling with this movie. I really liked it. I didn't have any scenes where I thought, "Eh gads. Don't want to see that again." I would gladly watch it again. And the same goes for No Country. I want to see that again.

But still-- Blood was just a little, itty, bitty bit better for me.

This is a tough contest.

But for all round quality filmmaking No Country for Old Men pips There Will Be Blood at the post.

I think that some of the other actors in There Will Be Blood were overshadowed by Daniels performance.

I'll never look at bowling the same way again!!

I keep meaning to post this:

Sailing to Byzantium

That is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees -
Those dying generations - at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God's holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

William Butler Yeats

i enjoyed "NCFOM" much more.
i thought "TWBB" was pretty boring except for the last couple of scenes and Day-Lewis' performance. it was like a show on History Channel.
there's a thread matching old actors with new ones with a blank by Day-Lewis' name. i submit that he's the new Al Pacino.
