Last night at FSLC, we saw an engaging docu about author Harlan Ellison. Either this info will interest you instantly or you will draw a blank, in which case you should probably stay away. Harlan was there in person and regaled the audience after the screening, along with director Erik Nelson, who also produced Herzog's GRIZZLY MAN.
It was a loving but unblinking look at a guy who has lived his life his own way for most of his 72 years. I've known Harlan for about ten years now, and despite his combative reputation, he's one of the sweetest and most generous people around [to those who treat him the same way], as all his friends will certainly agree. But not until I saw this retrospective of his life and work did I understand how fully his career has been fueled by something you can only describe as rage, the lust for revenge on those who have wronged him. He's always been the bad boy, but he has some very deep wounds, and a memory like an elephant -- maybe that's why he's the planet's senior enfant terrible.
Anyhow, if you've encountered Harlan's work, either in print ["'Repent, Harlequin!' Said The Ticktockman" and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" are two of his most widely read stories] or by watching the 80s TWILIGHT ZONE series, BABYLON 5, or the very finest episode of the original STAR TREK series, "The City on the Edge of Forever," look out for this one. As he says in the movie, most people will wind up seeing it on their home TV screens. I just wanted to make sure any Ellison fans out there know that it exists.
