Hello all.

I'm not sure if any of you Fourumers have been watching, but NBC has been airing a show called Fear Itself, which they are billing as a series of 13 one-hour "mini horror movies," with episodes directed by established film directors. Past episodes have been directed by Ronnie Yu and Brad Anderson, and tomorrow night's show will be directed by John Landis.

Other channels have tried things like this before, most notably Tales From the Crypt and Masters of Horror, but this is the first time a network has aired a program like this. The results have been mixed, of course, but it's an interesting experiment.

My friend Craig and I have been writing a blog of sorts about this series, which you can read here. I don't know if anyone's reading, but it's been fun writing this. As you'll soon see, these aren't exactly conventional reviews. By all means, read them and comment on them. Please. Thanks. By the way, don't believe a darned thing in these articles. I think Craig is actually trying to review the episodes somewhat seriously, but I've made my half of the blog as ridiculous as possible.

I've been watching and will continue to, though I find the concept so self-limiting ["cutting-edge" "horror" on network TV] that it borders on ridiculousness. Notice that so far they've all had bleak endings; that must constitute membership in the "modern horror" club. Even the obviously heroic body-switching victim in last week's ep couldn't catch a break.

Yet I'll still watch, because my beloved LOST is on hiatus...

I'm a fan of the horror genre, and so I keep watching. I felt the first two episodes ("Sacrifice" and "Spooked") were out-and-out ridiculous. The third, the body-switch episode "Family Man," was rather pointlessly bleak -- I grant you that. There didn't seem to be any reason or purpose for what was going on; it all seemed arbitrary. But, still, it wasn't as silly as the first two, and it at least told a coherent and somewhat compelling story. I give them points for trying. The show's attempts at onscreen violence and makeup/gore effects have been pretty silly, so "Family Man" wisely steered around those things and was content to mess with viewers' minds instead. That's why I felt the last episode was somewhat of a step in the right direction.

Anyway, John Landis' episode is set to air in about an hour from now. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.

I saw it, and saw its twist ending coming a mile away. What's common in all four thus far is that they must end grimly. Like I said, I think that's the price of admission to the club.
