Just another example of Nolan wanting it both ways: the impact and gravitas of a main character's death, while pulling off a comic book resurrection stunt.
Actually, now I think of it, they've realised how well received the character was and made shit loads of cash out of the film so they can now justify forking out for CGI shots for the entire return performance. Besides; Ledger's not coming back. |

| Oh, yes, indeed, Holmes is way prettier. In fact, I don't think it was her acting that was bad in Batman Begins, it's just who she is that's the problem. She was miscast, she's always going to be Joey Potter, she's always going to be a virginal sweetie pie. Maggie Gyllenhaal has that sadness in her eyes, she's just got this aura of gravity around her. I've seen the movie twice now, and the scene where she gives her final speech just destroys me every time. You guys are heartless, man. |

I just got back from seeing this tonight. My overall impression was, simply, WOW. I mean, just, WOW! But as the initial shock wears off, I've got to say that I'm with Bafta on this one - almost completely. And what got me more than all the fantastic explosions, fights, fancy transportation, special effects, amazing makeup, costumes and various impossibilities (like bending that gun barrell - yeah, that got a giggle out of me, too) of what goes on the screen, I have to say that all that flash really took a back seat for me. This is a psychological study, the type that makes us think that while we may believe we know right from wrong, the truth is, nothing is really black and white. Not today, not anymore. Forget the plot holes and twists that come at you so fast you're not sure what's going on. That's just the show - the road you have to travel to get to the essence. For me, that could be that the opposite of evil isn't good - but rather, hope. Without hope, there's no motivation to be good or do the right thing.
It's late, and I'm still a bit blown away by this, so pardon my awe here.
Still, I wish I could see it again. |

I finally wrote my review of this movie. Very hard to review a blockbuster after so many people have written about it, and I hope I gave it my own twist. Bafta - you're my friend I talk about in the review.

i didn't get the ballistic scene.
can anyone explain how he learns anything by taking a brick that was hit by a bullet, then shooting four other bullets into four other bricks? then it seems he uses some sort of x-ray to virtually reassemble the original bullet.
i don't get it. |

For some odd and wonderful reason, my aunt, in her slight dotage, decided she should get me this DVD for Christmas, which we celebrated together Sunday. We watched the film, and most surprisingly, not once did she utter her two most damning comments: "How long IS this movie?" or "Well, that was different." In fact, she had me pause it while she went for more coffee and at the end said "That was really good. Is that the same boy who was in that knight movie you like so much? Yes? I thought he was Australian?"
I won't deconstruct the film, I've not watched it a dozen times yet, but I did like it. I'll just be a fan girl about it and say it rocked. Heath Ledger was amazing, and I think his performance would have garnered accolades had he survived last January. There was something both cold and sinister in that performance and I believe I detected hints of Lecter, fava beans and a nice chianti in bits of it. I adore Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine was underused, Aaron Eckhart was surprisingly good and in some ways, the film could have actually stood on its own without a Batman character. Yes, Maggie G was a little wasted in this, but the scene where her character meets her demise was somewhat shocking - you knew she was going to die, but the visualness of it was startling. I did note one or two abrupt cuts, but only one was distracting. I can't name it at the moment, but it wasn't the pencil/eye scene, I thought that cut was perfect. I'm rushing this, it's 2 am Christmas Eve morning and I need to sleep before I start baking all of those cookies. The Joker really never did tell us quite what happened to his face, did he? Then again, there's no need to be quite so serious. |
