I know now that I'm getting older. As I watch all of my childhood icons pass, I feel the inevitability of it all inch closer. While "Shaft" is a classic Isaac Hayes ditty, the one that gets me is his rendition of the Burt Bacharach tune made famous by Dionne Warwick: "Walk On By." The almost plodding arrangement and twangy guitar riffs perfectly set off a druggishly slow siren song in the background, all while Isaac's husky baritone plaintively wailed that sorrowful and regret-laden request, that his lover just walk on by. That song represented the emergence of soul music; not burdened with the political isms of jazz, nor bound to the line of acceptability that defined 70's pop. It was pure expression, and it was lovely.

For me, I will always thank, love and appreciate Isaac Hayes for giving me that perfect little capsule of soul.

Isaac walked on by.

I read in the obituary that Hayes had recently finished filming Soul Men with Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson. It occurs to me that perhaps Samuel L. Jackson might want to have a check up soon, stay out of fast cars and delay making films with snakes.

His last film is Soul Men, which is due out in a few months, and which also starred Bernie Mac and Samuel L Jackson, whose insurance premium must have gone up a fair bit in the last few days.
