I sometimes have a moment of irritation when a review I've painstakingly assembled using Lego is demolished with a sweep of the hand, but then I think to myself: these MERPs are voluntarily giving up their time to trawl through the drivel I've submitted, along with the gems put forward by others, and they haven't been paid since my bank got all arsey about my FWFR subscription and refused to pay it in Euros. Then I feel better and go back to painting my toe nails in a calm and relaxed frame of mind.

I agree. And Benj deserves a break from our belly-aching, too. I just sent him a private message because a resubmission wasn't accepted as part of my 20 submissions. I thought better of it and retracted the message. Whether I get 20 or 19 new submissions next week (because I'll resubmit the reworked rejected one then) makes no difference. The world is still a better place because of FWFR. That's what counts.

People are always trotting out these old chestnuts.

Being a volunteer is not a basis for doing a bad job. There is no reason to think that there would be a shortage of volunteers if Benj asked for them on a fair basis, i.e. according to the requirement imposed on the original ones. It's also unreasonable to present MERPing as a selfless ordeal when in fact it is a fun privilege. If they don't enjoy it, they should stop, not be ridiculous.

We haven't been given the opportunity to pay so the site being free is neither here nor there.

I partly agree with Salopian. While I don't want to be perceived as a whinger, I do feel I'm not going to accept every decline with a stoical shrug when I disagree with the reasoning (or lack of it).

The latest in my particular case is that my re-submitted review - the one first declined for being a duplicate of a different film - was declined again today without any further comment. That's just annoying, seeing I had a valid reason to dispute it and would have appreciated a further explanation to account for the decline.

How did such a rude and stupid person become a MERP? Who hacked in and stole some perfectly nice MERP's login???????????

Without us, the august body of reviewers, this site would be just a cute idea.

I posted this thread with the hopes of inciting some sort of reaction[selfish, of course], and I guess I accomplished my goal... What with the flame burning up a folder in the 'Reviews' section of Fourum and such, but...

I came to realize that my complaints kinda came with a crux... The site I love so much can giveth, but it can often taketh away, often without apt explanation.

Don't get me wrong, the denials I experienced from the film 'Benjamin Button' helped me realize personal shortcomings from a submission stand-point, and I've moved on from the experience...

I explain everything now, leaving nothing to chance, as I hope to crack the top 20 for reviews submitted. I'm not a vote whore, per se, but rather some guy hoping to climb a rather distinct ladder(Votes are nice, keep'em coming, as I hereby declare 2008 'The Year of the Cankle').

It could have been worded better, certainly. However, it is a fair point. If a review is declined, it shouldn't just be batted back for another punt without any attempt at reworking it or further justification attached.

In fact, it could've been worded a lot better, certainly. I expect my MERPS to take into consideration many things... Has this really been simply punted back without any attempt at an explanation? If not/if so, what's the motivation?
What was CankleFetish' motivation for re-posting five(5) reviews for the same film with nary an explanation?

I beg you, why?!(Love the dramaticism)
I've never re'subbed a review w/o an explanation, so why would I do it 5 times for one particular film?! This cannot be answered here, I know that.

Let's move on...

Just spotted this one and felt I should clarify.

The MERPs and I used to correct spelling mistakes when we saw them but have since desisted due to certain people complaining that their reviews had been 'corrected' when they didn't need correcting because said person never makes mistakes. Now here we have a review with a mistake in it and the MERP accordingly declined it and left it up to the reviewer to correct if need be or clarify why the misspelling if not.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

Benj,

I too have had a number of reviews declined for obvious spelling mistakes, I have put in the comment box, saying thanks for pointing it out and I would not have minded them correcting it. I did not know that obvious mistakes where being left due to previous complaints, now I do, I understand.

Thanks for clearing that one up.

Dear MERPs, if the mistake I make is obvious and you do correct it then thanks, much appreciated. If you feel, to be even handed, you have to decline then I understand. I have to say that whenever it happens the Merp does generally ask did you mean then put the correct spelling for me. This although being a little frustrating has taught me to try to be more careful at submission time.

cheers

As you can see from my posts, besides my awesome erudition, I am also a consummate speller. Never do I make mistakes. MERPs, your current no-amend policy is appreciated. Never correct anything of mine. Each and every letter I submit has undergone the most arduous poorfreading standards.

As any causual observer of many of my posts will know that typos are are part of my diet, this is not a dyslexic nor a spelling issue that I have it is merely that I have the utmost confidence in my own typing skills that there is no reason to check my posts as i am just so perfect.

Well not exactly... I only Fwiffer at work and therefore have a limited time to enter my reviews and posts and I don't always spot them, it's a form of lazieness for which I apologise.

So Merps, go to town on my reviews, if it looks like a typo it probably is!!
