State of Play

Big biz has definitely made its mark recently as Da Enemy in a number of genre films. Well, hey, look around you - from credit crunch to the desertification of North Africa, multi-nationals wield more power and have bigger GDPs than small nations.

Adapted from a Brit-telly mini-series, King of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald guides this politico-thriller-cum-social-commentary very efficiently. While you're watching it, it zips along pretty well.

The acting's spot on - though Affleck doesn't bring anything special to his good-guy/bad-guy Congressman. Crowe, however, proves yet again he's IS special. One of the marks of great acting is not just that it feels natural, but that it's surprisingly unique. There's nothing generalized in any of Crowe's characterizations.

He's almost enough to fool you into thinking you're watching something of note. But you're not.

Crowe seemed fairly generic to me, but still fine. I thought it was pretty good. I'm a bit thrillered out these days, but this kept me interested quite well.

A decent two hours: Crowe as schlub was very interesting. With so many twists, the final one was practically waving its hands in the air. Still, it's nice to see somebody standing up for good old-fashioned newspapers. The credit sequence at the end was my favorite part.
