Looks fantastic, but sadly everyone outside the US has a 5-6 month wait before it arrives in their country- unbelievable!

Are Disney trying to punish those of us who avoid the many illegal ways to see films?

Anyway, am looking forward to hearing what those of you lucky enough to be able to see this from today think.

Not quite everyone outside the States. We Canadians get it today too.

On the other hand we're still waiting for "The Boat That Rocked".

I have yet to see a Pixar film I didn't love. Some more than others, but always love.

I'm getting a sneaky peak at a preview on Sunday morning - very surprised to hear how long it's going to take to get a proper release though. How absurd. If anything it'll harm the film greatly as the piracy will filter down very quickly from the States to the rest of the world and inevitably affect ticket sales if people can't be bothered to wait.

The only sense in that list is that NZ only has to wait 3 weeks...

Dang- so it's just the UK and Japan that have the 5 month wait. That makes sense I guess- dubbing from US to Japanese must take a while, as must US to UK

I really need to find out where you get your preview tickets from! All I ever get are ruddy mailshots for the latest Matthew Mahogany crapfest and red letter comedies.

As for piracy, I was wondering if maybe this film is 3D only and Disney's taking liberties with that on the release dates. Having said that, they always seem to do this with Pixar films.

So... I don't get this movie at ALL? That stinks.

(Of course, I can't watch 3D films anyway, but still...)

In brief: utterly gorgeous, and surprisingly groundbreaking.

A little less brief: I wasn't expecting wonders having already decided from the plot synopsis that it didn't sound as interesting a plot to hang a story on as Ratatouille or WALL-E. How wrong I was... time will tell with a second viewing somewhere down the line, but this may be Pixar's most sophisticated and simultaneously hilarious and moving film yet. WALL-E's first hour was cinema gold, let down for me by the tonal shift to the far less interesting humans. "Up" is more coherent than that - and who'd have thought you could love a cranky OAP more than an overtly cute little tin can robot? Carl is a complete creation, packed with contradiction and flaw. And here comes the groundbreaking - things happen in this film you wouldn't necessarily expect from a Pixar animation. It feels so much more grown up than the kiddie friendlier Nemo and Monsters Inc., which sometimes distanced me with their whimsy. Carl is more like The Incredibles' Bob Parr - imperfect and all the more belivable and adorable as a result. My girlfriend and I were totally choked up at moments and the hundreds of kids in the enormous Empire cinema in Leicester Square sat rapt, even during those parts without any action or humour (of which there is plenty of course).

I won't say too much more - if you love animation you know you're going to see it anyway - but I have to mention the dogs and Doug the Golden Retriever in particular. I love dogs - and Doug may now be my all time favourite movie dog. Just fabulous.

Well put Demonic - it was a magical time in the cinema and had me alternately restraining tears and guffaws.

I only wish the 3-D glasses were modelled after Carl's that would have been a nice touch (or at least young Carl's and Ellie's goggles).

As for the strange release date - I'll ask a friend who does marketing for Disney and Pixar animated.

Okay, after that post Demonic, I'm really regretting going to see Terminator instead of Up.

On the upside, there wasn't a line to get in, and not many kids in the theater

I'll try and catch Up before it disappears from the theater (I'm guessing I have three weeks or so here)

Kids in the theater is a plus (especially if they're yours) because hearing them laugh and appreciate the film on a different level is very enjoyable.

I heard from my pal at Disney and he said that films in the UK don't open well in the Summer as compared to October which is a bigger movie month - this is going to do well then so the priacy thing is not a big deal (people will want to see this in 3-d in the theater ).

Uh-ho... somebody best tell Terminator: Salvation, Transformers 2 and Angels and Demons that their wasting their time then Surely this can't be true- about the only big releases I can ever recall happening in October are all horror films.

Quite possibly- I know the kids dig 3D, but personally I'd be much happier without it and will be seeking to watch this in 2D. 3D strikes me as Hollywood's latest attempt to curb piracy and also extort more money out of people (3D showings generally cost a pound or two more that 2D here in the UK) whilst trying to justify it by claiming it's the future of cinema. Also, I'd much rather see a Pixar film in near perfect clarity digital 2D than slightly fuzzy 3D. But hey- maybe that's just me

Well it was razor sharp in 3D, not fuzzy at all, but this film in particular didn't strike me as one that especially made a difference being seen in 3D -unlike Coraline where it appeared to have been woven specifically into the creation of the animation. I think you'd have no different experience if you preferred to see "Up" in 2D.

I just realised the reason for the fuzziness issue. No matter what advancements there'll no doubt be in 3D tech, as long as there's glasses to be worn there'll be other folks scuffing the glasses over countless previous performances. Maybe I've just been unlucky with the glasses I got

Glad to hear Up's not been tailored purely towards the 3D crowd however.
