My friend (who's not a fwiffer but has read a lot of my reviews) hates reviews that are puns of other film titles. He says it doesn't make any sense because it's a different film! For example, he looked at this one and said "Well that's stupid - Benjamin Button has nothing to do with The Bourne Identity, so why is it in the review?"
I was just wondering if anyone knew how the whole punning of other film titles came about and who started it? Did Benj come up with it as a way of doing FWFRs or was it one of the members who first did it?

Benj didn't come up with any style of review: they all just evolved. Punning on a film title is just like punning on any other phrase: it's better if the thing punned on has some relevance but if it's totally disconnected it's still a pun. I don't see what difference it makes whether it's a film title or not. The subject matter of 'Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious' wasn't related to Mary Poppins in any way, but it's still one of the best ever puns. |

I don't know, but I agree it is stupid...
and I've probably written a few.
Now when the other film title is relevant, that's a great review...
and I hope I have more of this kind. I won't pimp any right now, though. |

Anyway, one can find connections between any two films. In your example, both are about men discovering their identity and travelling long distances in the process, blah blah blah. |

Not a pun but a movie title. |

[Matt], the good news is that he's not a relative.
You can't change your relatives.

I've just done a quick tot up and approximately 1/6 of my reviews pun on other titles, mostly with no relevance to the film reviewed. It's either laziness on my part or pure, unfettered creative genius. Or somewhere in the middle of those.

Oh no, I'm not saying I agree with my friend - I think he's an idiot! I love puns on other titles. I was merely wondering what genius first actually punned one to review another. I'd say a large percentage of mine are film puns as well.
You're quite right Whipper, but I won't be breaking up our friendship, I'll just keep him the hell away from FWFR from now on!
Sal, that's a good connection you found with my one, I can tell I'm gonna be looking for any interesting similarities between the films I pun now.

On the subject of punning other films, may I draw your attention to two film reviews each punning the other film title?
HERE we have Lemmy's wonderful review of LOST IN TRANSLATION...
And HERE we have my reply.

I'd put my money on it being the big N. Certainly, 'The Great S Cape' springs immediately to mind as one such example. |

The first to play on any film title (though not a different one) was Benj's brother in what I make to be the second oldest review (though it's against what's listed as the first added film, so that may not be accurate). |

You'll also find that puns on other film titles will garner more votes as they are more easily recognisable. (imho). |

I've been through the oldest 100 (submissions) and not found a cross-title pun yet. I'll do some more later... |

They can be cleverly done and I have written and voted for them, but I still think they are stupid in a way. I guess that makes me your friend, Matt. |

My review recently highlighted by boydegg falls into this category, of course.
What I find interesting is how certain ones take off, such that people become obsessed with punning on them. I cannot tell you how amazing a There Will Be Blood variant would have to be for me to vote on it now. |
