This is the true-life Spinal Tap that you may have heard of, but it's for real, and it's just lovely. A Canadian hair-metal band that was briefly hot in the 80s [and picture-opening testimonials from everyone from Lemmy to Slash show you just how hot they were], has managed to hang together for thirty years of dumpy bars and mind-numbing day jobs. They tour Europe, and everything goes wrong -- with the film crew following. Yes, you laugh at them -- the incandescent drummer's real name is even Robb Reiner! -- but by the end, you're pulling for them and for Robb's soulmate, singer/guitarist "Lips." They've been playing together since they were 14, and they've never stopped rocking. It will remind you a little of AMERICAN MOVIE, in the passion that these guys share, but Anvil is far more talented, and your shared heartbreak is paid off before the picture ends. I loved it. Don't miss it. |
