Have to admit I never saw this wonderful B-movie until after I became familiar with Terry O'Quinn's work on LOST. Boy, is it a gem. I always assumed it was a typical slasher flick, but no: it gives O'Quinn and the other actors room to show something beyond the cardboard characters you might expect. After screening it, I wonder how many LOST crew members had chills when they put the toupee on O'Quinn's usually head-shaven character for flashbacks, watched him shrink into the headpiece, and said, "Damn: it's the Stepfather!"
It's a guilty pleasure, but every bit the achievement that, say, HALLOWEEN is. No budget, plenty of scares, and O'Quinn just nails the normal/sinister character, who you know is a serial killer from the first scene, but gosh: maybe he's reformed! I know they're remaking this, but try the original. |
