I'm guessing that Katherine Heigl gets tired of playing such a heavy, if quirky character on "Gray's Anatomy" and that getting away from that is what makes her do such silly rom-coms as 27 Dresses, Knocked Up and now The Ugly Truth. None of these are really bad films, per se, its just that they're a touch too fluffy to be memorable for more than a few moments. Point in case, I saw her latest on my flight from Israel to Heathrow last week, and after my return, was so stumped at remembering what film I had seen, I had to look it up on the BMI website!

There's little more to this film than what we've seen before in other rom-coms where the leading female and male start out disliking each other and then... well, enough said - just fill in the blanks. And with many such movies, sometimes the supporting roles are what makes the film fun (i.e., see my post about Zooey's part in Failure to Launch). Here we get Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins playing partner TV news anchors who are also married to each other and who show that the spark has gone out of both their professional and personal relationships. Gerard Butler's in-your-face attitudes on "love" help ignite them again, and they take it almost as far as they can without going over the top. Unfortunately, they're underused, and could have had a better influence on the film overall had they been a touch more subtle while also beefing up their roles.

Heigl is fun to watch, but Butler looks uncomfortable most of the time, and his accent is so inconsistent, I'm not sure where he's supposed to be from - certainly not from Scotland, that I can tell.

I'll give it three stars and recommend you wait until it comes on TV!

The Ugly Truth

I really enjoyed Knocked Up, but you're right about Heigl's other film and this not being too special and that she could do a lot better, although I'm easily won over by Gerard Butler and so didn't find him uncomfortable.

3/5
