"I like to watch."

Mine is A.I.: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. After either Tony Scott or Michael Phillips of AT THE MOVIES put it near their tops of the decade, I decided to give it another whirl years later. It was wonderful.

I'll admit that Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT is still better [I re-watched it for the same reason], but not having to worry about being surprised by the langorous last reel made A.I.'s two-hour buildup even better. It's fascinating to see how deeply Spielberg bowed to Stanley Kubrick -- my favorite director of all time -- in a technical fashion, while still retaining his own childlike gaze. I'm not sure Kubrick would have gone along with the major-chord coda, but then I never met him, and Spielberg did. How much of a softie was Stanley? Not enough that he could ever bring himself to make this movie.

Dazzling visual fx, most of them by Stan Winston, but have they ever been done better? And for those who want heart, it's all up in here. I don't want to go into the plot: just rent/spin it [I saw it in hi-def on HBO], and tell me I'm wrong all these years later. And yes, I too was a naysayer when it first appeared.

Can anybody suggest others that glisten when polished off? I'm game for more re-views!

The Royal Tenenbaums

When I saw it at the cinema, I thought it was a bit stupid, but before I had ever seen it again my opinion fermented such that when I saw that the D.V.D. had been released I bought it immediately and was not disappointed.
