I only have three major issues:
1. Only one nomination for Coraline.
2. No nominations for Drag Me to Hell (director? sound design?).
3. No nominations for Terminator Salvation (visual effects and sound design were superior to Star Trek, in my opinion).
Other than that, I think this year's nominations are pretty good. |

| Well, all I know is that I got up at 8am this morning to hear them announce Sandra Bullock and clapped when they did. I'm so happy for her to finally get some respect for her career to go along with all that "industry-wide darling" stuff. |

The Oscars new ten-nominees something-for-everyone seems to have done its job. I'd put my vote in for Inglourious Basterds or The Hurt Locker. Just as long as Avatar or The Blind Side doesn't win it.
And please, PLEASE, no Oscar for James Cameron. Papyrus-font alone should cost him the win. |

My 2 cents, as someone who hasn't been paying really close attention to the buzz: The biggest surprise to me on the BP list is District 9. I remember it getting pretty good reviews, and then didn't hear much more about it until now. (What if Nine, 9, and District 9 had all been nominated, along with Up and Up in the Air? But I digress.)
A Serious Man also surprised me. I never doubt the Coens, but this one seemed to come and go with relatively little notice.
And even without paying attention, I couldn't miss all the buzz around Julie & Julia, so its omission was a surprise to me.
So far, I've only seen Inglorious Basterds, but I plan to do the AMC Best Picture Showcase again this year -- 2 days' worth now that there are 10 nominees. Should be fun! |

You didn't miss anything in the end credits except a joke: "No Jews were harmed during the making of this picture."
(It got a laugh when I saw it). |

I don't actually know what any of the nominations are. Has no one posted them here or did I miss it? I feel out of the loop as for the previous few years I had seen virtually all of the films but I haven't even heard of some of those in B.B.'s BAFTA thread.
1. Assuming it's up for Best Animated Feature, what else could it have been nominated for?
2. Thank goodness: terrible film.

Um... because it isn't an Animated film, per se?
Maybe they should have a new category: Best Film with Graphically Enhanced Humans.
(And the Oscar for that category goes to... Avatar! [Wild Applause!]) |

A nice film, yes - and I'll probably buy the DVD (not for me, for my sister, who was one of Julia Child's biggest fans). Streep does a very good job impersonating Child. However... Child was (from what I've read) not as comical a figure as this movie portrays her. She took herself very seriously, and I have my doubts that she would have approved of this film. I won't spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it, but in the ending of the film, there's a piece of information which gives strong evidence to support that theory.

| Yeah, the problem is that for all its technological splendor, deep down AVATAR is no more an animated film than, say, 2012, or SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. If it were allowed into that category, it would be unfair to genuine animators. Captured, enhanced, whatever you want to call it, okay, but an animated film requires every jot to arise from the work of the animators. In AVATAR, there are humans in there too: they create facial expressions, mouth placement or what wind-instrument players would call "embouchure," physical movement [IOW, "animation"]. If you want to relegate AVATAR off to one side, you'll need another category, as parodied above. |

It seems that they ought to do something to bridge this gap that is not going to go away: remember how Serkis couldn't get a nomination because Gollum was too animated.
I'd say they should make it Best Animation in a Feature Film, so that it is only based on the animation and not the whole film, and therefore it doesn't matter if there is also non-animation. At the moment, a film with good performances and script but mediocre animation can win, which is a bit weird. The other specialist categories don't require the overall films to be good, after all. |
