Ponyo

Haven't seen anything else by Studio Ghibli, and am undecided whether this is a bit too self-consciously weird and arbitrary. 4/5 for now, closer to 3 than 5.

Studio Ghibli isn't everyones cup of sake. However, there are a lot of treats in store if it is your thing.

My personal recommendations are " Spirited Away " ( some of the visuals are astounding* ), " Castle in the Sky" ( Great Robot! )and " Porco Rosso " ( pure 1930's whimsy )

It's not all whimsy. Miyazaki knows how to slip in an emotional punch ( especially about loss ).

*The train ride across the lake gives me goose bumps - it is both beautiful and achingly poignant

I think if you're at all into animated films pretty much all of Ghibli's output are absolute must sees. My personal favourites are "Spirited Away" (agree about the train ride Airbolt), "My Neighbour Totoro" (utterly charming, perfectly encapsulating the highs and lows of being a child), and "Grave of the Fireflies" for its handling of a dark topic with a real emotional punch. But none of them are less than 3/5.

To the above I'd add "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Princess Mononoko".

I hadn't remembered that this, which I have seen, was Ghibli. I wasn't that impressed: 3/5 and probably 5/10. However, I've got Spirited Away on disc and am looking forward to seeing that sometime.
