Youth in Revolt

I know that some people were down on Juno for having unrealistically eloquent teenagers (as if realistic ones would be interesting to watch), but there have been a few too many in that ilk now, usually starring Michael Cera. Having said that, I still enjoyed this one and it stuck with its conceit energetically and confidently.

It could go down in my estimations, but I'm looking back on it pretty fondly at the moment, so 4/5.

I really enjoyed this film. I didn't choose it - my flatmate's girlfriend turned up with a couple of DVDs so I thought I'd give it a go, and I'm so glad I did.

I like Michael Cera but I had been coming to the conclusion that he plays the same geeky, baby deer character in every film. And as the film starts, that's exactly what you get...but, the dialogue is so sharp and the characters so well drawn that you run with it. I think anyone who enjoyed Juno will find this similarly appealing.

It's a very simple premise: boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy develops cool french alter-ego in order to be with girl. A lot of similar films start well but tail off, but this maintains the snappiness right through to the end. Cera's little boy lost persona is used to great effect, but he is very believable as the french bad boy too. One of my friends said that Cera could very well be playing unnerving psycho killer type roles in a few years based on this and it's easy to see why.

Now it's Jesse Eisenberg's turn to do something different.
