This is an old topic i'm sure but it was spurred on by a watching of "Eagle Eye" but it could have been any number of similar films. Now , if I see someone's name on the poster like Tony Scott or Michael Bay I know exactly what I'm getting. Big stars, Big Bangs and Big Hair. Perhaps a "concept" thrown in to fill the gaps between the bangs and the shower scene. However, no one ever thinks that "wow, this film really looks like it might be one to get me thinking about the big issues in society".
So why do they bring out films where they introduce a topic close to today's news...be it the current situation abroad, concerns about privacy or paranoia about security....then completely ruin it with a BIG FINISH!
Why is it that a complicated issue can be solved with a hefty uppercut to the jaw or a couple of bullets? Usually in a high-tech nerve centre. In all these films , the whole shebang collapses like a deck of cards when the steely hero or heroine bests the bad guy. All of a sudden the authorities , usually scoundrels to a man up to that point, do a 180 and say " Wow, thanks for uncovering that..if not for you the country would have been ruined. You and your meaty uppercut deserve a medal!"
Funny how no one has brought out a film about a put-upon guy getting chased from here to Christmas by rogue Bankers. Said fellow could confront the Head Banker in his ritzy offices and say " Well, you tried to ruin the economy but here's where i foil you.....". Oh , hang on... |
