My latest column for the Morning Star is tied into the UK release of American: The Bill Hicks Story. As a special treat for UK readers, there's a mystery guest!
Enjoy.

Saw the Bill Hicks story last night. Fascinating to see the background and to finally understand why he became the man he became.
As far as I'm concerned he's the most important stand-up ever. To be angry, depraved, smug and preachy, yet still remain hilariously funny and deal with universal truths makes him a genius in my eyes.
Anyone who hasn't seen him before, watch Relentless. It can be uncomfortable viewing at times but it's never less than compelling.

Agreed, Biggy. A Hicks bio was one of the last books I bought at Avon [I didn't take it to publication, but I acquired it]. I had just done Michael O'Donoghue, who was the best comic writer of that era, definitely influencing Hicks, and the agent correctly thought I might be sympatico. |
