Did I really lose a review for 'Slither' simply because another reviewer used the word 'sluggish' in their submission, as did I?
This is getting a little out of control, and it's particularly aggravating when I lose 3 20-vote reviews in one swipe. With so many reviews written on the site, there will inevitably be those that are 'similar' to other reviews, but if they are not similar enough to be considered exact, then fucking leave 'em alone.
Or better yet, why not just raze the whole database, then we can start from scratch, and everybody can fight to have some sort of variation on 'Fin' or 'The great 'S' cape' written for the appropriate films?
It's gotten to the point where I'm scared to log into the site, for fear of seeing how far I've fallen down the approved reviews list... |

Benj seems to be going through the reported reviews, which is great. As there is such a large backlog, there will inevitably be some errors where he trusts reports by people with bad judgment (for example, I have lost a review where half was similar but half added something new), but once the backlog is cleared I'm sure he'll be able to look at each reported review more carefully.

As you've somehow had far in excess of the 'maximum' approved since the cap has been in place, I don't think you get to object too much. |

I'm all for clearing the backlog, but something seems fishy...
Regardless of how many post-cap submissions I've had, I get to object as much as I would like. Finding a loophole in the process doesn't mean I need to sit idly in the corner and keep my mouth shut, if I don't like the direction things are heading!
Many of the (10+)reviews I lost today were quality, had some votes behind them, and dated back to 2007. Do you mean to tell me that it took 3 years to figure out that the reviews I've been cultivating for that time weren't worth a shit?! I'm fucking pissed a tad upset, and it has nothing to do with how many reviews I've written post-cap... |

No, it hasn't taken three years to figure it out: it has taken until now for Benj to have time to process reported reviews. The reviews in question may well have been reported right after they were approved.
I have lost seventeen reviews, almost all ones I reported myself (rather than deleting them, so that the votes could be transferred). There are only three which I wholly or partly object to: one that puns on a character name in a totally different sense to another review, one that I mentioned above and one which I openly submitted as a non-racist version of another review.
If you are not happy with any of the decisions, then resubmit them: you definitely don't get to object to using up a few slots from your quota to do so. |

Most of the reviews I've lost in the process were deservedly taken away, no qualms there. But some defy logic, and therein lies my angst.
I've resubbed a couple that will hopefully get through, though I'm not all that hopeful. having said that, I've come to terms with my losses and my grieving period is coming to a close.

Sorry to hear you're not happy about a decline Cankle. Generally, I only decline dupe reviews where they're almost identical both in phrasing and sentiment. Of course, how almost 'almost' is is likely highly debateable, but I don't make a habit of declining reviews just for sharing one word.
Let me know the review and I'll check which review it was apparently similar to. |

Benj,
Can you confirm that where you are declining reviews as duplicates, you are deleting the more recent one? Or are you deleting duplicates merely when they have been reported?
Thanks |

I'd like to stress that I'm not deleting, just declining. (This is my safety net for when I'm in the wrong and anyone feels the need to resubmit.)
And yes, the system automatically declines the later of the two reviews, so I can't mess that bit up at least. |

I was initially worried about the chronology of declines, as it had been years since many of my recent removals had been submitted, and there was no way for me to check the validity of said reviews and the chronology with which they were discarded. But, upon further review... I'm gonna let sleeping dogs lie.
If 'sleeping dogs lie' has already been used in the fourums, then please disregard this post, as it has no merit, and should be kicked to the curb, regardless of those other reviewers who would find solace in the fact that I've mentioned it and may respond accordingly...
Blah, blah, blah... I've had too many Sam Adams tonite to give the matter too much thought, but was still curious to see if the thread was headed in a productive direction. The fact that Benj responded means I need to get my ducks in a row, and find specifics to match my angst... Which I will.
Please pardon me for another day or two... Sam is calling my name, and he's very convincing!
On a side note: The book shipped to me today through Amazon's ordering system, and that will undoubtedly make things alright. I wonder though... How many of the reviews in the book will inadvertently be deleted once the backlog is cleared...? Food for thought... Seriously, I can't wait for that book to arrive...
HELL, I'M PUBLISHED! and I counted 4 reviews in the Amazon sample pages to back up my excitement! Life is sweet. If I had to lose 20+ reviews to get 4 published, then so be it!
Plus, 'Urban Cowboy' is on TV right now, and I really wanna hear the part where Travolta explains that Cowboys got 'smarts real good' hehe, I love me some movies! |

And another thing... the fact that calmer outwitted me in my loophole of submissions has not been lost on my sense of competitiveness...
DAMN! I'm always second place(or worse) to somebody else on the site... Is there no way to find my own niche? |

No, you can check very easily. The I.D. numbers of reviews are chronological. I checked all of mine and the declined ones were all newer (although admittedly I had reported most of them and I had therefore checked the same thing before doing so).

Even though the reviews for the book were (partly? mostly?) selected by Yukon, the King of Duplication, hopefully within each film (if not across the whole website) it will have been the older review that has been chosen in each case (at least where it has been approved -- I've had one declined on the basis that the newer duplicate could be used in the book, even though it is of an adult nature and thus that is extremely unlikely). |
