Saw this on Sky a couple of weeks ago.
If you have an interest in English football (soccer) of the late 1960s and early 1970s, then you ought to watch this. If you aren't, but you like watching well crafted movies with a good acting and a decent script, then you ought to watch this.
It's the story of arguably the most charismatic English football manager, Brian Clough, and the 44 days he spent in charge of Leeds United. At the time Leeds United was the top team in England, and Brian took over as manager as Don Revie moved away to become manager of the England national team. We learn of Cloughie's relationships with his club chairmen, the press, the staff and fans at Leeds (the "Damned United" of the title), and his family, among others. Not the least of these is the love/hate relationship he has with Peter Taylor, very much Brian's right-hand-man and footballing muse.
Fresh from "being" Tony Blair in The Queen, and David Frost in Frost Nixon, Michael sheen puts in another fine performance as Brian Clough. Very ably supporting him are Tim Spall as Peter Taylor, Jim Broadbent as his long-suffering club chairman, and Colm Meaney as a spitting-image Don Revie.

I enjoyed it as well, even though I have virtually no interest in football. I saw it at the cinema (although it wasn't in one of my Cine File accolades -- it really bugs me when a film somehow slips through!) and I also saw it on (European) television a couple of weeks ago, and found it interesting enough to rewatch. It's a shame that Spall is so much a worse physical fit for Taylor than Sheen is for Clough, though.
