I would enjoy talking about CITIZEN KANE this summer, after I've had one more chance to watch it. PSYCHO if that doesn't suit.

Time's almost up on #3 - frankly a disappointing turn out, even though we started late the film is easily watchable on Youtube and worth it - any more contributions before we slip into the 'turd?

I've sent messages a few weeks apart to bife but as yet I've not heard anything. I have Cheese_Ed's selection though, and he's the next in line. Worth moving on to the cheese course, or waiting for some juicy bife?

Well I'm feeling trebly guilty:

I said I'd participate in FWMVC and to date I've not watched a single film selected
I'm 2 days late posting my choice despite reminders from both sean and demonic
I don't really know what film to pick!

I was thinking of using Turks Fruit - it is a 'classic' dutch film starring Rutger Hauer in his early days, and i remember being engrossed by it many years ago when i first met my dutch wife. It has a huge reputation in holland. Watched a few excerpts from it recently though, and i'm wondering if i didn't just enjoy the rather frequent pornographic interludes

Any thoughts? Is an obscure semi-pornographic (but still 'classic') foreign film a suitable selection?

Can anyone let me know how i can watch the previous 5 FWMVC selections on the net? There's for sure no way to rent most of them in singapore!

Hey bife - I think any film is a suitable choice as long as there is a valid reason to choose it. I think "Turkish Delight" (as it is known in the UK) is a fine choice - not only because it has a good reputation it's also a film I've been meaning to watch having recently seen another of Verhoeven's early films - "Soldier of Orange". I'll start up the thread and hopefully some of our other contributors will join in. Feel free to contribute some opening thoughts to set the ball rolling. Personally I'll do my best, but my end up viewing and commenting later as and when my current work eases up and time allows.

As for the previous selections:

"Teeth" and "The Passion of Joan of Arc" can both be watched in their entirety on Youtube with a little searching, the other three are slightly less accessible. I think "Double Indemnity" can be found in segments online elsewhere - some of the Japanese equivalents to youtube appear to have it with subtitles.

Forget Youtube, who wants to watch shitty quality postage-stamp-sized movies on your computer screen broken up into pieces? Not me...

Torrent them (yep, illegal downloads), here's how:-

a) Install uTorrent (that's your torrent client, very easy to use).
b) Find your torrents here, it' s a torrent search engine in the same way Google Blogsearch is a blog search engine. Example below.*
c) Either watch the movie on your PC (best player is VLC, it will play everything), or on a BluRay player. On your BluRay player it'll look fine and will probably be indistinguishable from a 5GB DVD even though the file size is likely to be around 700MB.

*1) Try "The Passion of Joan of Arc", like this. The number in green is the number of seeds (the more the merrier), the file size here is also 700MB which is the standard DivX size (so it can fit on a CD). The others there are around 4.5GB so will be lossless rips (no point in that at all unless you have bandwidth to burn).
2) Click it and you'll get this page. Click a few of them to find one with plenty of seeds, this one has 35 so that'll do. Click the "Download .torrent" link, it should open with uTorrent and off it goes. Leave it running 'til finished.
3) For subtitled/dubbed movies, make sure you get the one you want. You don't want to download then find you've got one dubbed in Italian. That information should be available on the download page. Also, on this example under "Size" there's a link saying 2 Files, the .avi is the movie and the .srt is the subtitle track. If you move the file around on your PC make sure you move the .srt track with it. Also make sure that if you're watching on your BluRay player that the .srt file has exactly the same name as the .avi file (apart from the suffix of course) or it won't recognise it. This may mean removing the bit saying something like [EN] from the end (telling you it's the English subs as opposed to [GER] (German subs) etc).

The time it takes to download a torrent is totally dependent on number and speed of seeds. I've downloaded a movie in 10 minutes, normally they'll take a half hour or so, sometimes a couple of days. No problem, just leave uTorrent running. DON'T sit and watch them or they'll never finish!!! BTW if a torrent is slow and you want to shut down / disconnect then no problem, the torrent will continue from where you left off next time you're online (provided you start uTorrent).

There, now you know how to steal movies the way the rest of the world does it. I use it to watch banned movies (I watched two last week) or movies that I am unable to source in NZ. I refuse to take no for an answer!

That should cover it. Any questions, ask away.

So with another abstention from the viewing selection, Randall choice has bumped forward to the 1st of September. It'd be great if another fwiffer not currently listed could select our twelfth title, and then I think we'll call it a day for now. Obviously we're in the quietest time for the fourum right now, but even so it seems there's very little discussion or general interest in the project as it stands for the time being.
