| Now I realize this is a really old film as far as threads here go, but I just rewatched this on satellite and a couple things crossed my mind. In retrospect, it occurs to me that the Academy had it all wrong. John C. Reilly likely deserved that Best Supporting Actor award. He was spectacular in his role as Amos Hart. His interpretation of Mr. Cellophane brought tears to my eyes tonight. Am I just blue? Maybe, but his character was the most sympathetic and full of pathos and it wrenched me. I was fine with Renee Zellweger not winning her award and to be honest, I've always been just a little bit stymied by the rousing success it was for Catherine Zeta-Jones. Not so sure I agree there either. I think at the time, the ladies were riding on a high tide of opinion that tended to inflate them and disregard the men. In hindsight, I think the biggest goof that the Academy made was in NOT nominating Richard Gere for Best Actor. He carried that film, I think, and gave a performance that I honestly can say now I didn't think he was that talented. His dancing was great, his singing was very very strong and his character was the gel that held it all together. I think that Oscar missed the mark here too much and in retrospect, I'm disappointed at its reception by the Academy. |

I couldn't agree more about Reilly ... Mr Cellophane is a seminal performance. I really can't figure out why he isn't more of a true screen star ... you know, the kind people "in the street" would know by name.

| I think he's probably recognizable, although in the genre of "I can't think of his name but he's in EVERYTHING" type of category. |

| I agree re "Mr. Cellophane." Reilly's perf was better than the guy I saw do it live. |
