There's something about a Bronte story that takes well to the screen, even if we do lose some of the marvelous narrative. In the most recent version of Jane Eyre we feel both the richness as well as the darkness that the book gave us. Mia Wasikowska's cleaned up face does little to hide the fact that she's actually naturally pretty, and Michael Fassbender isn't quite unattractive enough, but together they work well, and there's a chemistry between them that's undeniable. Jamie Bell was almost unrecognizable as St Johns, and he does the part justice. In fact, I'd say that as far as the cast is concerned, it is one of the better ensemble works of a classic story I've seen in a long time. Even Judi Dench doesn't overstep her minor role - even though it is always hard to have her in any scene without her gaining attention.
The script here takes much from the book, and I liked how it all comes together. We start off with Jane running through the moors and the rain in despair, and ending up at the door of the Rivers family. Then we get the full story through flashbacks. Mind you, one forgets they're flashbacks along the way, since her time with the Rivers is shown only few and far between, but that's the only problem here. Some might find it goes a bit slow in a few spots, but generally the pace moves well - there is a whole lot of story to tell and although it is a full two hours, it doesn't feel overly long.
