Will ya have some votes? Ah ye will... ah go on....
If you respond to this thread today with a link, my traditional Paddy's day whacking stick will bait ye with some traditional Paddy's day votes, so it will (green ones). So it's kind of like a parade.. but without the standing in the cold and the floats and green beer and that...

I've reciprocated, though I don't think I should have done so after Saturday. Wish I'd been organised and bought a ticket to one of the games, since I live only a short walk from Twickenham.
Commiserations mate, I'm not a big rugby fan, so I won't rub it in don't worry! From what I saw though (the second half) it just seemed to be ireland's day.. |

Bit late getting back to the paddy-whackery! got stuck in the office all weekend, but I think I've hit everyone now: Morekeleb, SOS, Samus and Lyndsey, you've been paddy-whacked! Koli and Choc, I sprinkled a few votes your ways to make up a little for the confusion caused by those Irish names!
Why, thank you!

Chocolady, Sorcha's irish for Sarah. Think that one's a bit easier to pronounce than Siobhn! (Koli, try that one as 'Shove awn')
Sarah! Well, that makes sense, despite her pronouncing it "SIR-ka".

Hey Sen, am i imagining things or did you just add the fada to your name!? Good to see you've gone for the gaeilge version!
Yep I added it a couple of days ago. I often use it, e.g., email signature etc, but haven't used it at fwfr before.
BTW, I noticed you sloped it to the right, whereas I always sloped it to the left. Did I get it wrong? Or doesn't it matter?
BTW2, I Paddy-whacked yer right back!
Thanks for that, seems there's been plenty of paddy-whackery done this weekend! (proper order for march 17th..)
Re the fada, i had a quick check on wikipedia, and a couple of on-line translators, and all the examples i found slanted to the left, the way you have it. For getting that wrong, t nire orm! (translation: ) |

And Koli, I don't think the irish language is going to get aaany simpler, we spend twelve years learning it in school, and most of us finish up with only a pretty basic understanding. Think it's more like an eastern european language than anything else.

The first (Siobhan) is my sister's name, and the second is one of my nicknames. |

(I think it says something about the male to female ratio on this site - only 1 pre-qualified for the chickeypoo.
I looked through the films in the accolades, and I've gotta say, I'm pretty bewildered that Romeo + Juliet is a chick flick.
Then again, there are people (like, say, my father) who think a film like A Beautiful Mind is a chick flick, so maybe.
Yeah, that one was on the fence with me. One of my old guy roomates would refuse to watch it - I'm thinking of changing it to Beaches.

Posted - 03/18/2006 : 09:04:43 I have the same excuse as ChocolateLady. I hope all you Irish and almost/part Irish folks had a good day.
I also have a similar experience with Irish names: I assumed for a long time that a colleague based in our Brussels office called Keesje (pron Kaze-yer) was Dutch...
And I still have difficulty spelling the name that's pronounced Shervorn.
Didn't the Germans have a plan to make their language more phonetic? Any chance of the Irish following suit? |

Me, me!
Yeah, irish isn't the easiest language on paper! Names are especially tough: I'm thinking of the likes of aoife, caoimhe, sofra, aisling, deirdre etc.
Short story: I have a friend called Aoife (pronounced Ee-feh), and when we were in school together in France, the french teachers - in all innocence - pronounced her name "Woof".
Sorry I missed this one, Paddy. We had a very busy Friday and I wasn't on the computer the whole day.
Yes, Irish names. There's a new girl in our Paris office. When I saw her name in her email address I knew she was Irish. Her name is Sorcha (pronounced Circa).

By the way - In honor of St. Paddy's Day I made a Luck of the Irish accolade with Irish movies: Leprechaun, Matchmaker, Angela's Ashes, Far and Away, and Boondock Saints. Grab a Guiness and knock yourself out!
