Posted - 01/29/2007 : 04:09:13 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! I deem a new FYC rule that from here on in must be followed.
You are not allowed to put a spoiler review in the FYC without labelling it. There are some reviews where this doesn't matter too much -- older movies that most people have seen. I don't think too many people would be shocked to know that Rosebud was a sled.
BUT IF THE MOVIE IS STILL IN THE THEATRES, AND YOU'RE REVIEW IS A SPOILER, TELL ME THAT BEFORE I CHECK OUT YOUR REVIEWS.
I don't mean to pick on one person in particular, but for the sake making sure no one else does this, I'm saying this publically, instead of PMing.
Conan, a few FYCs ago your review gave away the ending of The Departed. (Fortunately, I had already seen the film). Now, in the latest FYC, you gave away the ending of Blood Diamond (I film I wanted to see but haven't).
There's a very simple solution. In the FYC, simply say "Warning, my (insert movie name) review is a spoiler. If you choose not to view my FYC, please vote for five other reviews of mine." It's such a simple thing to do. And I think every voter should be required to give the reviewer five votes if the pass on looking at his 5 reviews. The reviewer should be rewarded for putting up a spoiler label, not penalized by getting fewer votes.
If you are on this site, it is because you are a movie fan. And there is nothing a true movie fan hates more than having the ending of a film they want to see ruined. (Except for watching Adam Sandler movies, that's really annoying...)
I hope this message doesn't come across as too harsh Conan. I'm NOT super upset about this, but a warning just seems like common sense to me. |

True enough as there is a contractual obligation to visit the reviews offered. I'm OK with the idea of a spoiler alert (since I was the main offender anyway). Has anybody seen the kkkkonan kkkkills kkkkute kkkkanines! thread? [Conan slowly sidles out of the line of fire while whistling innocently.] |

This brings up a good point though. At least half of the reviews for Psycho contain one of the following spoilers: that (1) [CHARACTER'S NAME] is the killer or that (2) [ANOTHER CHARACTER'S NAME] gets killed. Both spoilers are very well known even to people who have not seen the film.
And about 25% of the reviews for The Empire Strikes Back contain the key spoiler ([CHARACTER'S NAME] is [ANOTHER CHARACTER'S NAME] [RELATIONSHIP TO THE OTHER CHARACTER]) that by now everyone knows whether or not they saw Empire Strikes Back if for no other reason than because the second trilogy is explicitly about that spoiler.
And about 99% of the reviews for The Crying Game are explicitly about the key spoiler for that film ([CHARACTER'S NAME] is really a [DISTINCTION]).
Riiiight. Just for fun, the people in line were spitting out spoilers that most everybody should know by now. The transgressor, however, had spoiled a brand new movie. Bet she never does that again... |

I avoid movie pages for movies I haven't yet seen for that reason. As Conan suggests, making reviews less specific to avoid spoilers makes them more generic. |

Did he? I could not remember seeing a spoiler for this film (which I would have remembered since I also haven't seen it and thus would have been annoyed), so I checked through the last round and couldn't see a post from him - am I missing something? |

Posted - 01/30/2007 : 01:04:33 OK, my thoughts.
Spoiler Warnings I think this is a good idea. It's just basic courtesy, and I think it would apply on most (if not all) movie-based websites. It's not hard to write something like "Spoiler for Titanic" in one's opening post. I've added a line to the FYCTH title at the bottom of this post, whoever starts the next round should use this, please.
Compulsory Votes I don't like the idea of any kind of compulsory voting. IMO there's enough voting going on here; by that I mean that there are plenty of completely boring reviews on the site with plenty of votes, simply because people see votes as currency. Votes are supposed to encourage clever review writing, and elevate good reviews above ordinary reviews so they are at the top of personal and movie pages. There is no way am I going to vote for a review unless it's voteworthy, irrespective of how nicely someone asks for the vote.
So how about we leave this as totally optional; if a voter doesn't visit someone's FYC because of a spoiler warning, then they are free to reward that person for being considerate with the warning by visiting their page and casting a few votes if they want.
FOUR YOUR CONSIDERATION - TREASURE HUNT
I say:
Put any five reviews you like in your F.Y.C. list. The only rule is to not use the ones from the previous round - you must change them every round. Post here to declare that you've done it. Sooner is better than later. Provide a spoiler warning in your post when appropriate. You must read the F.Y.C.s of all participants. The next round starts on Monday or Thursday at 6:00am FWFR time, whichever comes next.
And Yukon, you're welcome to fix the spelling of "protocol" any time you want. |

Posted - 01/29/2007 : 23:33:34 Once I was standing in a movie queue behind a person who had just seen Lars Von Trier's DOGVILLE. She said it was well worth the three hours, "but it took an amazing turn near the end when [FAMOUS ACTOR*] [ACTION*]ed [RECEIVERS OF FAMOUS ACTOR'S ACTION*]."
* = Edited by me. Anyone who has seen DOGVILLE can easily fill in the blanks.
At once, she was horrified. Wished she could take those words back. Realized many, if not most, of us in this film festival queue would eventually encounter this flick, and now she had spoiled a true left-field ending for anyone within earshot.
What did the cineastes do? They took it all in stride, but our heroine was now forced to endure various spoilers as queue members tried to top each other, through successive gales of laughter in which she eventually joined: SPOILER ALERT [I have removed proper names that were uttered that day to try and spare some of you, but imagine all the details added to these sentences]
"It was [his] SLED!"
"[He] thought he was his own mother: he was fucking NUTS!"
"[He] was on Earth all the time!"
"[He] was a ghost and he didn't know it!"
"So was [THAT SAME FAMOUS ACTOR]!"
Etc etc etc. IMHO, the proper and cheerful way for a cinephile to say, "Watch it with the spoilers."

Brilliant! I will have to include a spoiler in every FYCTH because then, instead of POSSIBLY getting five votes from each FYCTHer I will be GUARANTEED five votes from each FYCTHer! |
