Hi all,
If you were a MERP would you yay or nay this (for Pirates of the Carribean, at World's End):
Two birds, rolling stone.
Here's my brief defence of it ... it's a play/combo on two well-known sayings (killing two birds with one stone, a rolling stone gathers no moss). The 'two birds' bit refers to two main characters in the film ... Elizabeth SWAN and Jack SPARROW. And the Rolling Stone bit? Well it's no big secret now who's playing Jack Sparrow's dear ole dad!!
So tell me ... thumbs up? or thumbs down? and if it's a nay ... why?

I'm sure it is, but in quite a nice way. The way I heard it was that Depp begged Richards for ages (maybe even years) to take the part, and the last I heard was that he had relented.

I'm sure it is, but in quite a nice way. The way I heard it was that Depp begged Richards for ages (maybe even years) to take the part, and the last I heard was that he had relented. |

I think you're right. Going to be an interesting storyline either way!
Will's Father is Bootstrap Bill who was put into a chest and sent down to "Davy Jones' Locker" before the first film. But because of the curse on the gold, he was stuck there un-dead. He came back in the 2nd film as one of Davy Jones' crew and lost his eternal soul to Jones in a game of Perudo - so until someone gets rid of Davy Jones forever, Bootstrap will continue to "live" (you call that living?) with Davy Jones as one of those fishy sailors.
Captain Jack Sparrow's father's health wasn't talked about one way or another in either of the first two films, that I can recall. |

If it's true, I can't wait to see if old Keith can live up to 'himself' on screen. If I remember the story correctly Sparrow's father is dead - so not much make-up required for Keithy then |

Just to let you know - it's already been given the MERP's poo-poo once and is now on 'death row' awaiting appeal.

Thumbs Down. It's too much of a stretch.
I got the Rolling Stone reference. Wasn't sure about two Birds (I remembered Sparrow but couldn't remember Swan.)
But the main problem is when I read the review I never thought of "Kill two Birds with one stone."
How about "Two birds. One 'Stone.'"? |

I actually thought the reverse would be the case, though I can appreciate a non-British perspective would be different. Women (in British slang - of course not literally) are birds. The characters here are not birds in any sense of the word. They just have the names of birds. (cf. My surname does not mean that I am in any sense a craftsman.) I therefore think that the sense in the review is more loose than even the slang sense, and therefore the former warrants inverted commas more strongly than the latter. |

I'd agree with Sal if it didn't make it look like he was saying "two women", which I'm afraid writing Two 'birds' does look like to me.

Seeing as they have only got the names of birds, I'd personally put 'birds' in inverted commas. That would also help make it less 'generic'. Mick Jagger has been in loads of things: I expect that some of them include two prominent women. Also, Richards is a Rolling Stone, not a rolling stone, so you'd have to be sure to capitalise it. This would also make it less likely to be 'generic' in other regards. |
