I'm after a word ending in -nce that means cleanliness, tidiness, hygiene or anything that may fit with the O.C.D.-type desire for these.

If anyone can come up with a suitable word, I'll be very impressed and thus look through a whole bunch of their reviews. I'm currently using acquiescence, as that also fits the character, but something meaning cleanliness would be more satisfactory.

What about 'touchy' ... since there are also some moments when he takes offense?

Thanks again, B.B.

Happy to help!

"Touchy"? You needed us to wrack our brains for the most obvious word imaginable for "overly tactile"?

Man, are you TOUCHY!!!

It's just that it's an overly tactile subject for me.

It wouldn't have done without the double meaning (which I hadn't thought about), as it's not that typical to use it in that way.

Thanks everyone. Touchy wins, since he is indeed also rather prickly and it alliterates with teacher. Will visit you later as well as lemmy, B.B.

I always liked the word

Smarmy

(But your mileage may vary.)

It does have several relevant meanings, but I think it just too strongly comes across as meaning unstylish.

O.K., new one.

A better word than paedophilic, predatory or slimy for the teacher in The History Boys. The first is not accurate since they are all eighteen, and the other two are I think more negative than is fair. I really want a single word for overly tactile; I don't think tactile alone will do.

How about "tacky"? It carries the sense of being sticky, it carries a mild sense of disapprobation, and in the right context, it carries a tactile sense of discomfort.
