I'm after a word ending in -nce that means cleanliness, tidiness, hygiene or anything that may fit with the O.C.D.-type desire for these.
If anyone can come up with a suitable word, I'll be very impressed and thus look through a whole bunch of their reviews. I'm currently using acquiescence, as that also fits the character, but something meaning cleanliness would be more satisfactory. |

A bit of a stretch, but would efflorescence work? or even irradiance? |

Would simply "cleanse" work? Not sure if you are looking for a rhyme or general sound. |

Innocence? It's a synonym to at least one meaning of the word clean, but I doubt it's suitable in this particular case.

Thanks.
Nice tries aahaa, but I think you're right that they would be too much of a stretch.
Thanks turrell, but it needs to be -nce, and a noun.
Good synonym Ali, but your doubt is right.
Yes, insistence could describe the character very well, B.B., but unfortunately the phrasing has to be something that he wants rather than the way he is. |

Hmm - you didn't say that in your original post. But, if you're already using 'acquiescence' then syntactically 'insistence' should perform an equivalent function. But hey - it's your fwfr - so go with whatever you fancy

I know -- I didn't want to risk making people think something wouldn't fit that would.

No, because he demands cleanliness and acquiescence, but he exhibits insistence. |

I don't think there is a word that fits the requirements precisely.

Is the review for As Good As It Gets?
---
Edit: Sorry, I forgot to post this, and would have avoided a double post had I remembered I had only just posted on the thread, and were I not a moron.

Wait: all you want are words that mean cleanliness, tidiness, hygiene and end in -nce? No problem:
cleanliness-nce, tidiness-nce, hygiene-nce.
No need to thank me: goodness-nce is its own reward. |

Aw, just look at the list and see if you can find one:
http://www.morewords.com/ends-with/nce/
That'll keep us busy.
Since -nts would be a homonym (like precedence/presidents) maybe try http://www.morewords.com/ends-with/nts/
I think MguyX has a point, insofar as if it fits in the pattern you might be able to "make up" the word. |

That's certainly the best option so far (if it's not too obscure to outweigh it's advantages over acquiescence). The main problem is that the character is non-white, and all the definitions say "the act of becoming white; whitishness". The latter is O.K. for the cleanliness sense even if it is not usually used (semi-?)metaphorically, but I'm concerned that the review will come across as "Desperate to become white". Hhmmm.
Great site, C.L. I haven't been through all of those yet, but will do. Thanks.
No, it's not for As Good As It Gets. |
