Well, at the start of the year I set out the films I thought would be the must-see's for 2006.
Wrong.
So time to edit the selection.
"Inglorious Bastards" and "Sin City 2" haven't materialised. "Lucky Number Slevin" was good but won't stand the test of time as a must-see.
So I have
Casino Royale
The Da Vinci Code
Pirates Of the Caribbean 2
Superman Returns
V for Vendetta
X-Men 3
I need 4 more and I'm looking at Borat, Clerks 2, A Scanner Darkly, Snakes On A Plane, The Prestige, The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine. But I'm open to any other suggestions.
I'm kinda heading towards "Scanner" going in and although "Miss Sunshine" was a 5* film for me, I'm not sure it'll stand.
So, opinions ? |

As odd as it sounds, I tend to base the popularity of a film on how well I can sell autographed scenes from the film. As expected, Pirates of the Caribbean, wedding Crashers and DaVinci Code cast autographed pics have reaped tremendous profits for me. I can't give away a Snakes on a Plane pic. |

All I can say is that I'm happy with the Essentials from the 40's through to about 2000. From 2001 onwards I become slightly less confident as I think only time can tell which films will finally be the essential viewing for any given year. Pre 1940's I'm pretty much governed by a general concensus of opinions as I've probably omly seen about two thirds of the films listed.
There's some valid comments and I think even by the middle of this year this could well be tweaked a bit.
Oh and I'm pissed that V For Vendetta is now 2005 as it was definately a 2006 film here, but it'll have to go, either into 2005 if I squeeze one out from that year, or just go.
Perhaps I should start a thread on the Essentials for other years as it seems to get some juices flowing and it's good to see some arguments discussions on film's for a change.

Although I do not agree, your second criticism that the film was boring is a fair one and you are not the only person who felt that way. Your first criticism is more puzzling because it does not challenge the film itself as much as it challenges the whole notion of presenting documentary evidence to explain a phenomenon to a layman. |

No offense GH, but I don't need to see an MRI of a tumor know I'm in trouble if the doc tells me I have cancer.
But, I suppose anything that helps open peoples' eyes is a good thing. If only it hadn't been so dreadfully boring. I found that documentary to be EXCRUCIATING. At least Michael Moore goes around essentially pulling pranks to keep things interesting. |

I already knew the big idea behind it, but not the details and it organized it and argued it in a way that made me understand how deep and important the problem really is. |

I thought that Rovark's accolades followed the date given here, but V for Vendetta is 2005 too. (That's the only case I can find of a different year; all the older collections that I have checked stick to the year listed on this site for each film.) |

Snakes on a Plane was a box office disappointment, especially considering the amount of hype leading up to it. It shot up to #1 for a week and then practically disappeared from theaters. So it certainly wasn't the "must-see" hit of the year. Does it count that a lot of people are talking about a film if none of them bother to go see it? I don't think so. Despite the fact I know that I, personally, will never see 'Borat' or, in all likelihood 'Snakes' these are probably the must-see's of the year - although time will tell if a film like An Inconvenient Truth or even Happy Feet ends up having better legs than 'Borat' or even 'Superman'
