Well, at the start of the year I set out the films I thought would be the must-see's for 2006. Wrong. So time to edit the selection.
"Inglorious Bastards" and "Sin City 2" haven't materialised. "Lucky Number Slevin" was good but won't stand the test of time as a must-see.
So I have Casino Royale The Da Vinci Code Pirates Of the Caribbean 2 Superman Returns V for Vendetta X-Men 3
I need 4 more and I'm looking at Borat, Clerks 2, A Scanner Darkly, Snakes On A Plane, The Prestige, The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine. But I'm open to any other suggestions. I'm kinda heading towards "Scanner" going in and although "Miss Sunshine" was a 5* film for me, I'm not sure it'll stand.
So, opinions ? |

I'd consider all of these, though not Clerks 2 (although I enjoyed it), I think you should definitely include Borat as it holds a unique place. But that also goes for Darkly and Snakes. The latter was a phenomenon, though - one should have seen it at the cinema, to be part of the whole thing, but there's much less reason to see it on D.V.D. or T.V. Little Miss Sunshine is one of my few 6s this year, so in your position I'd include it. I wouldn't include The Da Vinci Code, although it did a fair job of a poor novel. |

Any offbeat or less mainstream ones you don't include Rovark I may be adding to my 'Alternative Collection' accolade for 2006, which would certainly include "Little Miss Sunshine". I'd go along with the way you've previously chosen for your collection - the biggest films of the year, in terms of box office and reputation. "Snakes" has to be there really, maybe "The Departed". |

Here's the IMDb Top movies for 2006 by average vote for your perusal. Probably anything with more than "X" number of votes and more than a score of "Y" should be on the list. |

Might I suggest The Last King of Scotland? Its number 11 on the IMDb list that Sean referenced and its a damn good film that, it seems, nobody has seen except me and 943 people I have never met. |

It's on my list. I use the IMDb Top-whatever lists extensively for queueing up Kiwi-Netflix. E.g, Top movies by country, Top by genre, Top by year etc and there's little chance I'll miss something (except for the countless good movies not available for rent). I've found some absolute corkers recently through that method. Most recent discovery was Fucking ml (1998). The only movie I've ever seen that made me wish I was a lesbian... .......
So many movies, so little time.... |

You've gotta put in The Queen. Miren will probably get an Oscar for that performance.
I've heard good things about Children of Men and Little Miss Sunshine as well.
Don't put the Borat one in - it will NOT stand the test of time.

So I'm finalising with
Borat Casino Royale The Da Vinci Code Little Miss Sunshine Pirates Of the Caribbean 2 A Scanner Darkly Snakes On A Plane Superman Returns V for Vendetta X-Men 3
Despite the fact I know that I, personally, will never see 'Borat' or, in all likelihood 'Snakes' these are probably the must-see's of the year - although time will tell if a film like An Inconvenient Truth or even Happy Feet ends up having better legs than 'Borat' or even 'Superman'

I thought this would be a good place for this. Feel free to add your own ...
GHcool's Preliminary List of the Top Ten Films of 2006
1. United 93 ("XCIII-ting flight creates heroes." - noncentz). No film affected me on a deeper level this year than this one. It recalled for me that terrible day in a way that was suspenseful, sad, and thought provoking. I have not yet seen Bloody Sunday, but judging by this film and The Bourne Supremacy, it looks like Paul Greengrass is shaping up to be among the most intense directors currently working in the thriller genre. 2. The Prestige ("Abracadavers" - demonic). Like Christopher Nolan's other great film, Memento, this puzzling, brain twister of a film is a lot of fun from beginning to end. Cinematographer Wally Pfister (who worked on all of Nolan's other films as well) creates a moody, theatrical atmosphere that also feels realistic enough for us to believe in this world and these unlikely characters. 3. The Last King of Scotland ("Forest in the jungle." - Chris C). This and United 93 were probably the two most important films of the year in terms of its combination of expert craftsmanship and important social issues. I would be very surprised indeed if Forest Whitaker does not get a nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Idi Amin, the dictator of Uganda in the 1970s. 4. Dreamgirls. As said elsewhere here, Jennifer Hudson gives a performance that is sure to get her a nomination and perhaps even the Oscar. This is also a tour-de-force of film editing by Virginia Katz (she did Bill Condon's other two films) who weaved the action in and out of song and dance as good as any film I've ever seen. 5. The Da Vinci Code ("Something about Mary Magdalene." - BaftaBabe). I never read the book, but I thought the movie was one of the most entertaining and beautifully crafted films I've seen this year. Whatever you think of the pseudo-religious history, you've got to admit that Ron Howard and his team know how to take us on a fun ride. 6. Pan's Labyrinth - Beautiful cinematography, a haunting score, and a convincing performance by Ivana Baquero as the young girl in Franco's Spain with fantasies of a better world make this movie pleasing to the eye and the imagination. 7. Screamers - A great, but little seen documentary about the Armenian Genocide starring the band, System of a Down. 8. An Inconvenient Truth ("Warning: Contains excess Gore." - Rockgolf). Opened my eyes to things and made me a more environmentally conscious citizen. How many films can change your attitude on political, social, and moral issues like this one? 9. Thank You For Smoking ("PR Puffing Stuff." - napchic). Very funny razor-sharp satire written and directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman (director of Ghostbusters). 10. V for Vendetta ("Knives and Fawkes." - benj clews). Not a perfect film, but a very cool one that had serious political undertones. Natalie Portman's sympathetic performance stands out as its highlight. Honorable mention: Hollywoodland ("Actually, speeding bullet faster." - Yukon). The screenplay by Paul Bernbaum (the father of a childhood friend of mine) made this among the most intreguing films of 2006.
I have not yet seen Pan's Labyrinth or Babel, but I plan to, and once I do, I will probably include them on this list as well. |

Snakes on a Plane was a box office disappointment, especially considering the amount of hype leading up to it. It shot up to #1 for a week and then practically disappeared from theaters. So it certainly wasn't the "must-see" hit of the year. Does it count that a lot of people are talking about a film if none of them bother to go see it? I don't think so. Unless it's some under-appreciated masterpiece, I don't see how it qualifies as an "essential" film of the year. And Clerks 2 barely made a ripple. |
