Posted - 03/11/2007 : 00:02:04 This may not affect everyone, but... I've just made a change to the submit code so that films can be added automatically by you guys.
All you need to do now is paste in the URL (copied from the IMDB) of the film you'd like to add (e.g. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0338512/) into the first box (where you previously entered the film title) and click the submit button as before.
Entering a review in the box below is completely optional now, so if you leave it blank the film will simply be added (provided it (a). can be found on IMDB, and (b). isn't a TV series or Mini series). However, if you DO add a review, the film will be added and your review put pending against it.
I should stress that you can still enter the film name in the top box if you want, you'll just have to wait on me to add it then though.
Oh... and the obvious plus to this is that now I've pretty much cleared out the yet-to-be-added films backlog, I can put more of my time into MERPing regular reviews again
I've tested this as much as I can think to and it's based heavily on the code I've used to add films automatically myself over the years so it should theoretically be quite stable (unless IMDB changes their page layout again), but please let me know if you find any nasty errors.
Other technical info you might not care about:
Films will by default be added with the IMDB title. As much as possible, I'll try and go in to ensure the title is the UK title at a later date. |

I think I've also recently noticed that if a new film is added to an acc, benj has now helpfully flagged this with a NEW sign in the acc list. But that may just be for films which are newly added to the db.
Yup- it's automatic for films that have been on the site less than a week.
But that's not new. I remember that happening before this change.
Nope it's not, but it sounded like you thought it was. Just wanted to clarify |

Also seems like a good way to undermine people trying to get accolades. If someone has an Accolade that is connected to a word or a person. Just find another movie with that word or person, add it, and TaDa!!! They just lost the accolade.
Yes, but if I've added anything to one of my accs, I announce it in JTC's accolade list elsewhere on this thread ... with the date of the change. So people can always check.

Personally, I think the new system is WONDERFUL!!! |

This works extremely well, Benj - very slick. This won't just save you time, but us too, since we don't have to type out/copy and paste the title too. I also often found it hard to remember what accolades films were for, whereas now I can add them straight away.
There's still room for improvement but it's getting there. Glad everyone seems to like what is essentially me shirking more responsibility |

Yes, I see that they go us. I hold out quiet hope that you'll change all of them to www. one day.
Can one just enter the ttxxxxxxx number then?
Nope- remember that text box also doubles as a means of entering a film title. Were you to enter just 2001, then the system has nothing to say that isn't a film title. Ditto with 0002001 or tt0002001. |

I'll always give www. links instead of us. ones - will they end up on the page like that or will they be converted?
Basically, whatever type of IMDB url provided, everything but the ttxxxxx number is stripped and it's all converted to the same URL format. |

For quick reference to check, TV series/ episodes on IMDB have double quotes around their name, TV movies (which we accept here) have (TV) after the name and Mini series (also a no-no here) have (Mini) after the name. Oh, and video games on IMDB have (VG) after the name.
Also allowed are straight-to-video releases, indicated by (V). |

Posted - 03/11/2007 : 15:48:06 This is great, Benj. I was aware that I was giving you a lot of work by adding so many films for accolades (though it still had to be done). I have still got a few large accolades needing films, one of which (Same Old, Same Old) I predict will have a massive number, so this will now save you a lot of time.

What a cool idea! Just for clarification for me, and everybody, could you definitively explain how IMDB differentiates between a film, a TV movie, a TV series and a mini series Benj? Otherwise I'm afraid we might get swamped with additions of TV series on the site.
I leave IMDB to differentiate . For quick reference to check, TV series/ episodes on IMDB have double quotes around their name, TV movies (which we accept here) have (TV) after the name and Mini series (also a no-no here) have (Mini) after the name. Oh, and video games on IMDB have (VG) after the name.
quote: edit: Oh! And what's the deal with films "In pre-production" etc. Previously films that weren't currently filming, or in a more advanced state weren't considered for inclusion.
There's currently no automated checks against these. Add announced films if you really have to, but don't be surprised if the film (and any associated reviews) are deleted without notice down the line |
