This may not affect everyone, but... I've just made a change to the submit code so that films can be added automatically by you guys.
All you need to do now is paste in the URL (copied from the IMDB) of the film you'd like to add (e.g. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0338512/) into the first box (where you previously entered the film title) and click the submit button as before.
Entering a review in the box below is completely optional now, so if you leave it blank the film will simply be added (provided it (a). can be found on IMDB, and (b). isn't a TV series or Mini series). However, if you DO add a review, the film will be added and your review put pending against it.
I should stress that you can still enter the film name in the top box if you want, you'll just have to wait on me to add it then though.
Oh... and the obvious plus to this is that now I've pretty much cleared out the yet-to-be-added films backlog, I can put more of my time into MERPing regular reviews again
I've tested this as much as I can think to and it's based heavily on the code I've used to add films automatically myself over the years so it should theoretically be quite stable (unless IMDB changes their page layout again), but please let me know if you find any nasty errors.
Other technical info you might not care about:
Films will by default be added with the IMDB title. As much as possible, I'll try and go in to ensure the title is the UK title at a later date. |

Great news Benj! Good luck with that.
Should we alert you to English title changes in the "Film title correction" (such as Life is Beautiful for La Vita e Bella) thread? |

Shouldn't need to- I'll try and do this on all newly added films. |

This is really excellent news. Bravo to you and I'm glad it will lessen your load.
I was just wondering if there was any way you could figure out (not right away, in your spare time) a way for us to seach for a film from the IMDB page number (you know, the "tt####" bit that appears after /title/ in the URL), as well as the title. This might keep us from adding films that already are in the database that we couldn't find for one reason or another (like that little problem I had with the Movie The Girl Most Likely To...). Just an idea.

Excellent idea, Chokky. I often spend quite some time searching on fwfr for a movie just to confirm it isn't on the site, before adding it. I.e, I search for keywords for all the listed alternative titles, then try and find a cast member of the film who is in a movie already on fwfr and search by that cast member. If none of that works then I assume it isn't on fwfr and add it.
Perhaps an alternative (or another addition?) would be to have an auto-reject in place, i.e, if someone tries to add a movie that's IMDb code is already on fwfr then it gets rejected. Or does this already exist? |

That sounds like a great idea and it might be easier to program, but I could be totally wrong about that.

I'm *pretty* sure this can't happen now- there's quite precise checks in place to ensure this. The only thing is, you're not currently informed if the film isn't added. I should also emphasise that, if you try to add a film (with a fwfr) that fails for whatever reason, the entry will go into my queue as before so no reviews are are getting lost here whatever the situation. |

What a cool idea! Just for clarification for me, and everybody, could you definitively explain how IMDB differentiates between a film, a TV movie, a TV series and a mini series Benj? Otherwise I'm afraid we might get swamped with additions of TV series on the site.
edit: Oh! And what's the deal with films "In pre-production" etc. Previously films that weren't currently filming, or in a more advanced state weren't considered for inclusion. |

I leave IMDB to differentiate . For quick reference to check, TV series/ episodes on IMDB have double quotes around their name, TV movies (which we accept here) have (TV) after the name and Mini series (also a no-no here) have (Mini) after the name. Oh, and video games on IMDB have (VG) after the name.

There's currently no automated checks against these. Add announced films if you really have to, but don't be surprised if the film (and any associated reviews) are deleted without notice down the line |

This is great, Benj. I was aware that I was giving you a lot of work by adding so many films for accolades (though it still had to be done). I have still got a few large accolades needing films, one of which (Same Old, Same Old) I predict will have a massive number, so this will now save you a lot of time.
I'll always give www. links instead of us. ones - will they end up on the page like that or will they be converted? |
