Thanks. I was hoping it would become an Oscar joke. I could imagine Jon Stewart introducing the accountants who keep the Oscar results with a line like. "They've been entirely independent, even though they heard that 'Brokeback' contained some, ehhhhhh, unusual ledger entries." |

Interesting take. Given that Annie Proulx's most popular novel was "The Shipping News" (Kevin Spacey was in the movie version), how about "The Sheeping News"? (Too late, I've already submitted it.) BTW, my top-voted "Homo On the Range" review for the film was submitted the day the project was announced and seemed destined to be a realllllly bad idea from the director of "Hulk". Who knew?
I'm also surprised no one has connected this film to the rather popular (on FWFR) "Out In Nature: Homosexual Behaviour In The Animal Kingdom". I've submitted "Brokeback Mountain Lions".
(And in a not dissimilar vein, may I recommend Dalmac's review of "Touching The Void"? Wish I'd thought of it first.)
Rockgolf, or however you're spelling it these days, i'm touched. i had another 'brokeback' tribute rejected that i thought was one of my best ever, for 'the other side of the mountain': Broke back mountain-skiing.
i was going to weigh in on this topic later on a related subject, but RG's touching recommendation drew me in sooner than i had planned.
for x-men i submitted 'Fagneto,' in reference to Sir Ian McKellen's orientation. i deleted it while it was still pending. i thought, for someone whose body of work i admire as much as Sir Ian's, it was over the line. if i ever were to meet Sir Ian (doubtful), i'd probably be starstruck and babble about how much i've enjoyed his films and i certainly would not call him a fag. and it probably wouldn't have passed the generic test, as the same gay actor played magneto in 3 films. i probably would have left it if the character was gay, rather than the actor. so was my review over the line?
and it's refreshing to have some intelligent conversation in the Fourum, rather than just vote pimping. btw, get those votes in for 'Broke leg. Mountain.' |

was his back broken in the movie? i know it was in the comics, and i think it was in the tv cartoon series, but i don't think it happened in that film. i could definitely be wrong though. i've tried to block as much of that freaky abomination of a film as i could. |

I agree with your decision to delete that one. Hurtful words like "fag" don't contribute to the kind of positivity that's generated on this site.
However, Sir Ian isn't completely sacred. Check out my review for Gods and Monsters. |

That's just because my review of Out: Stories Of Lesbian And Gay Youth In Canada "Brokeback Mounties." is still in the pending file...

A new reviewer, Basselope, just had a review for Brokeback Mountain published that I find to be a distasteful (and innaccurate) review. This was the first Brokeback Mountain review I read that I would categorize beyond a doubt as homophobic. |

I agree, not that there's anything wrong with that. |

Is 'fag' a highly offensive term then? (I only ask because I don't know, to be honest, plus this is far from the first time it's appeared on the site ) |

Even though I say "Sorry, I don't smoke" I use to smoke fags once. In Australia, cigarettes are called fags.

Ditto here.
I think I've recounted this before, but as well as calling ciggies 'fags', some people instead of saying 'borrow' say 'bum'. Then when they ask to borrow a cigarette... well, you can figure out the rest for yourself |

I know several homosexuals who often refer to themselves as 'fags'. But you never know. It might be like the term 'nigger'. When a black person calls another black person a 'nigger' its okay, but if a white person says it, its offensive.
I can ask one of my homosexual friends, if you like. |

Not offensive to me. Having said that, I've never bummed a fag. Or bummed a fag.
But, isn't it generic though? Couldn't it apply to any movie where homosexuals dance? And, I haven't seen Brokeback, but does someone dance with some gays? |

Only problem is: on the internet you don't know whether the person posting is black, white, male, female, straight or gay. I guess this rule on what's offensive or not can't really apply in the virtual world.
I had someone emauling me a few weeks ago about how she found the c word offensive. Amusingly (for me at least), the review she flagged was posted by one of the regulars who we know for absolute certainty is a woman. What is one person's offensive term can be another's witty aside. Who's to say which is right? |
