Or did you submit "Odyssey"?
It was spelled right when I submitted it. I was too lazy to look it up in the dictionary last night when I wrote in this thread. Believe it or not, I'm a professional writer. But when I'm at home, I don't like to look in the dictionary because it's too much like being at the office. |

Mine for Big Lebowski:
Foreigners, for ringers, linger
No offence but... I'm not sure I get it.
The Dude is commissioned by the elder Jeffrey Lebowski to make a payoff to the German nihilists who claim to have kidnapped Bunny Lebowski. John Goodman goes with him and brings a bag of his dirty underwear, which he calls "the ringer". The fake payoff (as well as the real one) is botched.
Later, the Dude realizes something's wrong because the elder Jeffrey Lebowski knew the payoff wasn't made, but never asked for the money back; therefore, the original bag of money also must have had no money in it. The Dude explains, "We threw out a ringer... for a ringer!"
At the end of the film, the German nihilists (foreigners) reappear outside the bowling alley (linger) and "vant ze money"; but it's already become clear that they haven't kidnapped Bunny and there never was any money, only two bags with junk in them (for ringers).
Also, it rhymes. Foreigners. For ringers.
If you've watched the film 20 times or so, it's a positively brilliant FWFR. No, really. |

Plus, I'd also love to see some of your favs given the thumbs-down by Benj and the MERPS [hey, wasn't that a group in the 60s]
Pearl Harbor - Film longer that WWII Dune - Long trek to sea All that Jazz - Death! The Musical! Independence Day - Emmerich documentary justifies SDI
Resubmit -- Death! The Musical! As -- Fosse's "Death! The Musical!"
That should be approved. It's clear which movie you're talking about and it's funny.
Good luck. EM :)

Thanks, EM. Just re-submitted, so let's hope those MERPS come tapdancing into my heart

There are three recent declines that I liked that are bugging me, partly coz I am not sure how to make them passable without ruining them.
The Godfather Part II - Kin. Don. Off Hyman. The Godfather Part II - History. Don. The Ten Commandments - Untide Nation.
The first one is simple and I don't get why it was rejected, unless the MERPS didn't get that to 'off' is to kill. The whole thing is an attempted pun on Kingdom of Heaven - it gets close-ish!
The second I am pleased with and I can't think of another film that deals so specifically with the early history of a mafia don. Please tell me if I'm wrong.
The third is convoluted. My explanation to the MERPs read: "Anag. of United and Untied. Moses united and freed the Jews. Spelling refers to Red Sea crossing." I could change he review to "Nation United, untied, un-tide" but that is clumsy.
Anyway, I'm rambling but wanted to get that off my chest, and I've discovered that bizarrely not many of my friends care to listen to my FWFR problems. Strange, that. |

Sorry SOS, I couldn't figure out that the first one was a Kingdom of Heaven pun until you said it.
And I still can't figure out the second. History Don. -- is it a play on words? Also, I think there are lots of movie about early mafia life: Bugsy, Once Upon a Time in America, Scarface (1930s version), Billy Bathgate, etc...
What've I've learned is that something that is completely obvious to me can be completely confusing to others. That's why I submit almost all my FWFRs with explanations.
Here is a declined I loved: "Whore'n Beatty " For the movie Shampoo. Warren Beatty plays a hairdresser who sleeps with lots of women. Turned down as too generic but I can't think of another Beatty movie where the main them is him sleeping with lots of women. I resubmitted as Whoring Beatty. Hopefully that works. |

Well there's McCabe and Mrs. Miller which actually dealt with whores. It's been a long time since I saw Shampoo but I don't recall any actual whores. Julie Christie was, however, very proud of her oral skills. She was the madam in McCabe. |

SOS, I'll have to agree with Yuke: to me both your GOD II reviews are gibberish. Until you said KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, I had no idea, and I still don't know what you're going for on the second one.
Sometimes we [I know I'm guilty too] reach so far for a convoluted pun that the humor is leached out. |

I guess it is an English thing. A don is also a professor at a university. So it would be similar to saying "History Teacher." It is not meant to be particularly funny, just tidy.

Agreed, guess once you have stared at something for a while you lose the perspective on it. I have submitted 5 word reviews before now as I have been searching so hard for the right phrase that the number of words gets forgotton! |
