Haven't seen Spiderman 2 (or 1 ) - so although you may be right, it doesn't make the list.
Godfather, I think I am in a minority of 1 in prefering the original. So although I am not adding it, I will grant that everyone else on the site will likely disagree with me

I agree with Titan's suggestion, 2 is a better film, but if it's not within your criterion, fair enough.

Well, my feeling would be that a 'better' sequel would negatively affect your original assessment of the first film in the series - you thought it was great when you first saw it, but when viewed coupled with the sequel, you realise its deficiencies. I don't think Godfather II is in this category - the films complement one another and each strengthen the other. I wouldn't say Godfather II is better than the first, or vice-versa, but I would say that both are just as brilliant.

I can't comment on Rocky - hated them all.
But certainly Toy Story 2 was even better than the first one - at least I thought so.
Also, the 2nd Back to the Future was the best of all three.
I also seem to recall that someone said they thought the 2nd Batman was better than the first one.
While we're on the subject - of the three Lord of the Rings, the only one I had any enjoyment out of was the 2nd one because of the trees. Of course, since that's in a trilogy, the 2nd one might not be considered a sequel.
Of course, if you ask me, From Russia with Love was better than Dr. No (but the third Bond movie, Goldfinger was even better than both of those first two movies).
That's all for now, but I'll keep thinking. |

I think 'no' is going to be a popular response in this thread

Just 'NO'. Toy story is one of the greatest children's movies of all time. Toy story 2 is ok.
Also, the 2nd Back to the Future was the best of all three.
Never saw the second one but would be very surprised if it was better than the first

No - they were all too long and too boring

Doesn't count as a sequel

One could argue that Chronicles of Riddick was better than Pitch Black.
Rocky II's just a do-over, right?
Noodle should have made the pitch for Mr. T. |

Yep, I don't agree about Rocky II but Rocky IV is my all-time favourite schmaltz 'bad' movie. ROCKY SINGLE HANDEDLY ENDS THE COLD WAR! Brilliant.
I don't agree on Back to the Future - the second was the low point of the series, which got itself back on track in the third.
Batman Returns? With the Penguin in his Rubber Duck mobile? You're kidding!
edit: Sludge and I were writing simultaneously. I was responding to the initial Rocky II suggestion. Yeah, R2 is pretty much the rematch, which Rock wins because he gets up first. I love that series. Have the DVD box set which I will re-buy when the sixth one comes out. |

If you've never seen the 2nd one, I've got to tell you to trust me and believe that it really is better than the first one. And its not just because this poor old ex-Chicagoian who is still a die-hard Cubs fan got to hear in that movie that the writers let them win the 2015 World Series! Seriously, Fox plays something like three different characters, does some amazing skatebording stuff with a hoverboard and much more. It got a BAFTA for its special effects and the jokes are much funnier than in the first one. I would humbly request you reconsider this - or at least see the film and then decide.

I enjoyed BTTF2 a lot too, maybe more than the original, but I think you have to have seen and remembered well the original to appreciate the jokes. Most sequels are less demanding in that respect.
Also, BTTF2 is only nominally a sequel, as it was made concurrently with BTTF.

Sorry Whip, but you're getting mixed up. There was 4 years between 'Back' 1 and 2, blurred by the fact that in the second film Marty's still trying to get to 1985. You're thinking of 'Back' 2 and 3 which were made concurrently. I still think 2 was trying too hard - the first one was clever and relatively simple, and the second one came close to ruining it. It was simplified a bit again for the third, which helped it hugely. |

Bife, i fully expect to be shot down here, but i have to suggest a few!
'Aliens'? In my humble opinion, better than the first.
And 'empire strikes back', the best of all the star wars movies!?
... last and nerdily least, i haven't seen it, but the first 'star trek' movie was pants, wasnt it? The second one was alright though (did see that one), with the klingons, and Shatner shouting 'KHAN!' ..... no!?
(ok, i think i lost any little credibility I might have had with that last one.. I'll get me coat ) |
