How about Terminator 2: Judgment Day? I love that movie. The first was just 'eh'. |

'Aliens'? In my humble opinion, better than the first.
And 'empire strikes back', the best of all the star wars movies!?
... last and nerdily least, i haven't seen it, but the first 'star trek' movie was pants, wasnt it? The second one was alright though (did see that one), with the klingons, and Shatner shouting 'KHAN!' ..... no!?
(ok, i think i lost any little credibility I might have had with that last one.. I'll get me coat )
I agree at least on Aliens and Star Trek, Paddy.
Batman 2 was WAY better. A creepy cool Penguin and Pfeiffer in a cat suit trumps Nicholson's portly Joker any day.
Riddick was god awful, Pitch Black was surprisingly good.
I MUCH prefer Toy Story 2.
I think X-men 2 was better than the first. I fear that 3 is gonna stink.
I think I liked Die Hard 2 better, and 3 even more better.
Road Warrior over Mad Max.

Haven't seen Spiderman 2 (or 1 ) - so although you may be right, it doesn't make the list.
I agree with Titan's suggestion, 2 is a better film, but if it's not within your criterion, fair enough.

Well, my feeling would be that a 'better' sequel would negatively affect your original assessment of the first film in the series - you thought it was great when you first saw it, but when viewed coupled with the sequel, you realise its deficiencies. I don't think Godfather II is in this category - the films complement one another and each strengthen the other. I wouldn't say Godfather II is better than the first, or vice-versa, but I would say that both are just as brilliant.

Ever since I noticed the BIFE, KOLO and STALEAN accolades emerge (attained one, pending reviews for the other) I've been looking for my own... Nothing yet... [/quote]

i definitely agree with Trek II, Spidey 2, T2, and i'm split on Alien and Aliens. (good excuse to visit my fave store) i definitely think Scanners 2 belongs on the list. and Highlander 2.
OK just kidding about Highlander. that was probly the WORST sequel of all time. hey maybe that'd be a good accolade, awful sequels. does it already exist?
"There can be only one!" ... good Highlander movie. |

Also, the 2nd Back to the Future was the best of all three.
I enjoyed BTTF2 a lot too, maybe more than the original, but I think you have to have seen and remembered well the original to appreciate the jokes. Most sequels are less demanding in that respect.
Also, BTTF2 is only nominally a sequel, as it was made concurrently with BTTF.
Sorry Whip, but you're getting mixed up. There was 4 years between 'Back' 1 and 2, blurred by the fact that in the second film Marty's still trying to get to 1985. You're thinking of 'Back' 2 and 3 which were made concurrently. I still think 2 was trying too hard - the first one was clever and relatively simple, and the second one came close to ruining it. It was simplified a bit again for the third, which helped it hugely.
I stand corrected on the dates.
However, as to whether BTTF2 was too clever, you speak for yourself.

Yikes, I was gonna put in my 2c worth, but talk about split opinions!
BTTF2 was nowhere near as good as BTTF.
Aliens probably better than Alien.
T2 better FX than T1, but I think I'd stick with T1 as having greater "Wow!" effect when it first came out.
I'd say Dawn of the Dead (1978) was better than Night of the Living Dead, and is regarded as the zombie flick by which all others are judged. It's the second of Romero's four zombie flicks.
Eveyone is entitled to my opinion. |

Yikes indeed.
Terminator/T2 - come on! Terminator was classic time-travel stuff, not only was T2 just a special FX binge that is already looking outdated, but it also undermined all of the time travel theory established in the original. In fact, not only is T2 not on my '2 is better than 1' accolade, it has long been sitting in my stinking sequels accolade instead
Highlander - glad you were all just joking! It is also in Stinking Sequels!
Alien/Aliens is a tough one, they are both great films. Don't think I'll add it, because of the strength of the original, not because the sequel wasnt good
Star Wars - this was groundbreaking. Empire Strikes Back was a good film, but I can't call it 'better than star Wars'
Spiderman 2 seems to be getting a lot of votes. My wife is a bit of a comic-book-movie fan, I'll talk to her tonight and if she agrees, it's in
BTTF - still holding off until I have seen it
X-Men - liked both films equally
Superman/superman 2 - so long since i've seen them i am not sure i can remember any more
Riddick - no intention of ever watching either film .....

A good way to solve controversy is to use the IMDb scores.
BTTF is miles ahead of the sequels. Spiderman 2 is ahead of S1. Alien is almost neck and neck with Aliens. But T2 is ahead of T1! I'll have to disrespectfully disagree. Dawn of the Dead is level with Night of Living Dead. Oh well.

Another vote against BTTF2 - I saw it in the cinema and was massively disappointed, even as a kid, watching it. I think it doesn't stand up on its own as a film, only as a middle point between the other films in the trilogy - I couldn't get real satisfaction just watching that one on its own - look how it ends! BTTF is a great film that stands apart from the largely unnecessary sequels IMO.
I felt much the same way about LOTR:TTT - just the middle point where not much happens. I loved Fellowship - it seemed the most magical and complete to me, and didn't suffer the multiple endings disaster of ROTK.
As for others....
Alien and Aliens are very different animals, hard to compare as they are both excellent in their (different) genres.
I think Toy Story 2 is better.
Empire Strikes Back is definitely the best film in the saga.
The dark and magnificant Terminator over its often silly sequel. Hasta la vista, indeed.
X2 better than X-men.
Riddick is a dreadful film, whereas Pitch Black is guiltily enjoyable.
No one has mentioned Evil Dead II yet - a great film, although it is arguably just a remake. Definitely should be considered.
But then I disagree with ones already making the cut - I much prefer First Blood, Kill Bill v.1 and Shrek! There's no accounting for taste!
